Early Literacy Specialist, Arapahoe Libraries (2 positions available)Inspire Learning and Literacy. Spark Curiosity. Shape Futures.Do you believe in the power of books to spark curiosity and joy in young children? Are you excited to lead storytimes, build relationships, and empower families/caregivers to support early literacy at home and beyond?Arapahoe Libraries is looking for two Early Literacy Specialists who love creating storytimes that are welcoming, engaging, and literacy-based. In this role, you'll create and lead age-appropriate storytimes and model early literacy practices that families can use at home. You'll also help support programs and initiatives that foster a love of learning, promote literacy development, and connect families to helpful resources.About the Role You'll serve children, families, and caregivers across multiple library locations, delivering storytimes in person and occasionally online. You'll partner with colleagues to plan creative storytimes, assist with librarian programs, support staff in providing youth services, and from time to time bring library services into the community through outreach at schools and other local organizations. Every day, you'll be helping children, and their caregivers build the skills and confidence they need for a lifetime of learning.Key Responsibilities Programs and Services
  • Plan, prepare, and deliver fun, literacy-rich storytimes that follow district best practices.
  • Share research-based early literacy tips and ideas with parents and caregivers.
  • Build positive, lasting connections with children, families, and caregivers.
  • Offer both in-person and virtual programming, including recorded storytimes.
  • Recommend books, materials, and activities that inspire learning and fit within program needs.
Professional Development
  • Create and update storytime resources and training tools for staff.
  • Stay up to date on children's books, early literacy trends, and new technology.
  • Take part in learning opportunities to grow your skills and knowledge.
Training and MentoringSupport and mentor staff in delivering high-quality children's services.Patron Assistance
  • Help families find the right books, parenting resources, and educational materials.
  • Promote early learning programs and events.
  • Keep children's spaces welcoming, organized, and ready for exploration.
Community OutreachSupport librarians in bringing early literacy programs to families outside the library.What You'll BringStorytime Creator: Designs and delivers welcoming, engaging, and age-appropriate storytimes.Literacy Champion: Develops activities and selects materials that support early literacy skills.Engaging communicator and performer: Captures attention and guides participation in groups of all sizes.Family connector and resource guide: Builds trust with parents and caregivers while linking them to library and community resources.Staff supporter and mentor: Models best practices and shares information to strengthen services for youth, families, and caregivers.Adaptable collaborator: Works in multiple locations with all members of the Early Literacy Specialist team and Child and Family Library Services department.Equity Focused Perspective: Practices inclusion and celebrates diversity in all programs. Alignment to ALD Core Values: Embodies collaboration, equity, and innovation.QualificationsRequired:
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Two years' experience working with young children in libraries, education, or childcare.
  • Understanding the importance of early literacy to child development.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and across multiple locations.
Preferred:
  • Experience working with school-aged children and teens.
  • Knowledge of children's literature in a variety of formats and genres.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English to better serve the needs of our communities
