Do you want to connect with others and inspire confidence, hope and healing?Richmond Behavioral Health is now looking for qualified Peer Recovery Specialist & Family Support Partner Interns to gain their experience with our Regional Peer Academy!The selected individuals will perform intermediate skilled human support work involving the assessment of client needs and providing access to needed and appropriate services including treatment, rehabilitation and service linkage, case monitoring and client advocacy functions, and related work as apparent or assigned. Utilizes lived experience with a child or young family member who has had mental health challenges. Work is performed under the supervision of the assigned Program Supervisor.Provides non-clinical support to individuals and family members engaging in services utilizing the education received in the DBHDS approved 72-hour Peer Recovery Specialist Training. Receives advanced recovery-oriented trainings along with a high level of supervision and support. Interns are placed at a CSB/BHA in Region 4 where they will share relevant lived experience, use a strength-based person-centered approach to support individuals and family members identifying barriers to reaching goals and building recovery capital. This work will assist un-certified Peer Recovery Specialist in obtaining their 500 hours needed to sit for the state exam.Essential FunctionsConnects individuals to community supportsProvides individual peer supportAssists individuals and families in navigating the mental health/substance use and physical health systemsHelps individuals and families self-advocate with clinical staff and for services in the manner of their choosingUtilizes the System of Care values and approach to support families to access needed services and supportsPromotes collaboration with families, providers, and other natural supportsProvides outreach and support to caregiver and assist with identifying resourcesProvides positive role modeling for caregivers as well as staffAssists individuals in crisis to be safe and helping them resolve issues relative to the crisis.Cultivates connections with a broad array of services that can assist in recoveryOffers personal insight and education on the process of recovery to teammatesAttends trainings and team meetings as required.Encourages the individual’s active participation in the treatment planning process by role modeling and teaching assertiveness and communication skillsAssists individuals to accurately identify and exercise their rightsFacilitates good communication between individual and clinical staff by providing a richer understanding of individual’s perspective and helping to bridge divergent views between clinical staff and peersPlans individualized therapeutic recreational activities to enhance social skill development.Assists individuals in obtaining medical, financial, vocational, legal, residential, and other necessary entitlements/services/documentation
Position RequirementsKnowledge, Skills and AbilitiesSome knowledge of community and Authority resources and programs of regional and State sources for the community service population; some knowledge of interviewing and supportive counseling techniques; some knowledge of social casework techniques; some knowledge of human development and behavior; some knowledge of the theories, principles and techniques of individual, family and group therapy; ability to solve problems within scope of responsibility; ability to analyze facts and exercise sound judgment in arriving at conclusions; ability to communicate complex ideas effectively, orally and in writing; ability to prepare clear and concise reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with law enforcement, medical personnel, clients, associates and the general public.Education and ExperienceHigh school diploma or GED. Completion of a DBHDS Approved Peer Recovery Specialist Training.Special RequirementsValid driver’s license in the Commonwealth of Virginia.Ability to travel to assigned work sitePlease note these are temporary intern opportunities with an expected duration of 500 hours.

Starting Salary Range $15.00 an/hr
