Position: InterpreterStatus: Part time, permanentLocation: Warren G. Harding Presidential SitesCompensation: $16.00 per hourSummary:The Interpreter is the consummate storyteller knowledgeable, approachable, passionate, fun, thought-provoking, dynamic and inclusive. Led by the mission and vision of the Harding Presidential Sites, the Interpreter focuses on leading visitors on guided tours through the Harding Home, Press House and grounds on the historic part of the Harding property. Interpreters also will assist with programs and activities that bring history to life and help visitors spark a personal connection to Ohio History.Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Create a positive environment for visitors of all ages and backgrounds by being hospitable, approachable and engaging.
  • Encourage visitor participation in impromptu and planned programming interactions.
  • Initiate dialog with visitors and answer questions to promote curiosity and relevance.
  • Communicate and collaborate regularly with colleagues to improve team effectiveness.
  • Assist with the daily operations, housekeeping and security of the Harding Presidential Site.
  • Assist with the implementation of emergency procedures when necessary to ensure safety of visitors, colleagues and the site.
  • Assist with public programs, tours and other events as necessary.
  • Become familiar with collections to implement historical interpretations and storylines.
  • Assist in deepening the organization's relationship with volunteers by working alongside them in day-to-day tasks, programming, and interpretive training.
Education and Experience:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 0-3 years of experience working with members of the public in a service, retail, or educational capacity
Required Skills:
  • Ability to engage with the general public, specifically provide presentations of history during tours and ability to think quickly to answer visitor questions
  • High level of focus on providing quality visitor experience including sensitivity to a variety of visitor needs
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Proficiency in various office software suites and virtual platforms, including but not limited to Microsoft 365
Work EnvironmentWork is performed primarily on the historic part of the Harding Presidential Sites, including Harding Home, Press House and grounds. Involves daily contact with staff and the public. Contact may involve dealing with difficult people. Days and hours may vary to accommodate specific program and events needs and will include seasonal weekend and evening work.
