Senior Scientist - Environmental Services
Location: Ridgeland, MS (Remote flexibility available)The Senior Scientist plays a critical technical and leadership role, handling a wide range of assignments, including complex and challenging projects. This individual must bring a high level of scientific and practical knowledge, applying the latest advancements to investigate and resolve environmental issues.We are looking for a strong technical "seller/doer"-someone who not only delivers high-quality results but also develops client relationships and drives new opportunities. This role will primarily support operations in Mississippi, with collaboration across company regions.General Responsibilities:Ensure technical accuracy and quality of all client deliverablesDevelop and maintain relationships with clients and regulatory agenciesPromote Thompson Engineering services and pursue project opportunitiesMentor, motivate, and guide junior staffRepresent the company at client meetings, conferences, and trade shows, including speaking engagements on subject-matter expertiseDemonstrate leadership and sound decision-makingOccasional travel may be requiredEssential Functions:Ensure all scientific/engineering work aligns with professional standards and good scientific practicesLead preliminary design studies, project planning, and layout activitiesConsult with clients, scientists, engineers, architects, and vendors to determine optimal, cost-effective solutionsSelect appropriate materials and equipment following sound scientific methodologyDevelop accurate resource and personnel estimates for project executionWrite clear, concise technical specifications and proactively gather necessary informationPrepare detailed technical reports, cost estimates, and schedules in compliance with applicable regulationsOrganize and manage personnel to ensure efficiency and adherence to budgetSupervise and assume responsibility for all work under your directionCoordinate efforts with interdisciplinary teams, including engineering, purchasing, and managementEnsure projects are completed on time and within budgetPrepare and oversee Phase I and Phase II ESA proposals and reports; have working knowledge of NPDES Permits, SWPPPs, SPCC Plans, and conduct stormwater compliance inspections. Perform and/or supervise field sampling events and guide technicians and junior scientistsParticipate in marketing efforts and business development by providing project write-ups and resume updates as neededFollow all company policies and procedures, including those related to safety and qualityAdditional Responsibilities:Maintain active membership in professional organizations and societiesDemonstrate consistent and punctual attendancePerform other duties as assignedQualifications - Minimum Requirements:Bachelor's or Master's degree in Environmental Science, Geology, or a related field from an accredited institutionPreferred: Experience with Phase I and Phase II ESAs, NPDES permitting, and Clean Water Act complianceCertification/Registration as a Professional (or Master's degree in a field without licensure requirements)Minimum of 10 years of environmental consulting or experience with federal/state environmental regulatory agenciesPhysical and Work Requirements:Willingness to work flexible hours and overtime based on project demandsAbility to travel occasionally, including field work and site visits as needed
