This is a Federal Work Study (FWS) position and applicants must be eligible for the FWS program to qualify. The Financial Aid Office can help determine eligibility.Position Summary: The Student Off-Campus Literacy Tutor is responsible for working varied hours in a local K-12 classroom or public library, tutoring select students in the areas of reading, writing, and/or math, and assisting classroom teachers with other activities as needed.Essential Functions: As defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by incumbents of this class.Position is open until filled with applications reviewed upon receipt and may close at any time.Note: Cochise College requires a post offer, pre-employment background screening of all employees.Duties and ResponsibilitiesDuties and Responsibilities: Within the scope of college policies and procedures, this position:Tutors and facilitates one-on-one sessions and study groupsOffers critical feedback on reading, writing and/or math assignmentsAnswers grammar, usage, punctuation and reading questionsAssists students with vocabulary and reading comprehension questionsHelps students clarify assignments and other materialParticipates in workshops and orientationsAttends training sessions held for student staffAssists lead teacher with general classroom dutiesPerforms other duties as assigned by the supervisorGeneral Expectations: Employees are expected to accomplish assigned duties in an efficient, effective and competent manner and to strive for improvement and excellence in all work performed. Employees will follow all college policies, rules, regulations and guidelines as they relate to this position.Education and Experience; Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesEducation and Experience Requirements:Enrollment at Cochise College with a minimum of 6 credits per semester and 3 credits in the summerPossess and maintain a 2.0 G.P.A. or higherFor reading or writing tutor position: Completion of ENG 101 with a grade of “B” or better, preferredFor math tutor position: Completion of Math 142 or 151, with a grade of “B” or better, preferredCurrent Arizona DPS Fingerprint Clearance Card or ability to obtain, as required by the community host organizationFederal Work Study eligibilityKnowledge, Skills and Abilities:Knowledge of and ability to follow college policies and proceduresKnowledge of and ability to operate a personal computerKnowledge of current technologies and word processing, database, presentation, and spreadsheet software, specifically Microsoft Office applicationsSkill in effectively communicating in person, by phone, email and textSkill establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other department staff, faculty, students, and the publicAbility to relate in a professional, helpful manner and to maintain composure when faced with difficult situationsAbility to organize and follow throughAbility to maintain confidentialityAbility to promote a positive atmosphere of teamwork and cooperationWork Environment & Physical RequirementsWork Environment: Work is primarily performed under general supervision.
