The Comparative Medicine Core oversees and supports Moffitt's animal research and technical support. We are hiring two Veterinary Technicians III to be part of developing this new program to provide professional veterinary care to the research animals, focusing on the highest animal care and welfare standards.Position Highlights:

- Exercises independent judgment in the assessment of animal health.
- Experience working with research facility, specifically mice.
- Experience working in a fast-paced, emergency/referral practice or veterinary teaching hospital, as well as multimodal anesthesia experience.
- Strong anesthesia monitoring and anesthesia protocol skills.
- Surgical experience with complex rodent models, including survival surgical experience and maintaining a survival surgery suite.
- Technical services support
- Experience with rodent breeding colony production techniques and maintenance.
- Performs specialized preparatory and specialized surgical procedures on various animal species.
- Performs specialized technical procedures for researchers. Coordinates scheduling technical procedures with research staff, maintains records, documents procedures, and logs time for charge back as needed.
- Independently leading daily rounds (including weekends) and examines, evaluates, treats, and documents health issues and their related service charges in research animals.
- Lead and mentors junior staff and provide on-the-job training to new technicians.
- Subject-matter expert in specialized skill areas such as proper medical record keeping, animal restraint, phlebotomy, intravenous catheterization, fluid therapy, aseptic technique, anesthetic monitoring of American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status classification system, level I-V and postoperative care.
- Bachelor's degree (from an AMVA program), six (6) years of veterinary technician experience inclusive of three (3) years working in a research facility.
- In lieu of a bachelor's degree, an Associate's degree (AVMA program) and eight (8) years of veterinary technician experience inclusive of three (3) years working in a research facility may be considered.
- Current license, registration, or certification as a veterinary technician. Will be required to provide documentation upon hire that shows passing of Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE).
- AALAS certification at the Laboratory Animal Technologist level is preferred.
