- Enforces the provisions of building codes and has the authority to render interpretations of the codes.
- Receives applications, reviews plan documents and issues permit for construction and alteration, demolition and moving of buildings and structures.
- Conducts inspections of the premises for which permits have been issued and enforces compliance with the provisions of the codes.
- Performs all required inspections and has the authority to accept reports of inspection by approved agencies or individuals.
- Secures such expert opinion as deemed necessary to report upon unusual technical issues that arise.
- Keeps official records of applications received, permits and certificates issued, fees collected, reports of inspections, and notices and orders issued.
- Inspects project for compliance with approved plans and specifications.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of houses and buildings.
- Knowledge of building codes.
- Knowledge of word processing such as Microsoft Office, spreadsheet applications and the ability to learn similar applications such as Microsoft Project.
- Ability to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
- Ability to communicate, understand and carry out written or oral instructions.
- Excellent presentation skills.
- Ability to deal effectively with contractors, staff, and the general public.
- Ability to work efficiently and accurately in an atmosphere of frequent interruptions.
- Ability to work odd and unusual hours. Weekends and overtime may be required.
- Ability to use a word processor, computer terminal and standard office equipment.
- Minimum of five (5) years’ experience as a contractor, engineer, architect, or as a superintendent
- The following license and/or certification is required prior to employment start date:
- ICC-B2 Commercial Building Inspector’s Certification.
- Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted New Mexico Driver’s License.
- Work hours subject to change with overtime work often required.
- Must be a self-starter and must be able to work long hours under stressful conditions.
- Subject to hazards which may cause personal bodily harm, smoke, common colds, influenza, dust, odors and elevated noise levels.
- Tasks may be performed on uneven, inclined, hard and soft carpeted floors, cement structures and surfaces.
