- Design major network and communications systems. Create and update networking system diagrams, equipment diagrams, etc. and implement moderately complex provisioning of connected systems.
- Coordinate with various engineering disciplines, project engineers/managers, and customer representatives to design telecom transport systems based on anticipated requirements.
- Serve as a design engineer for business units to implement networking and communications needs. Develop complete telecom designs utilizing standardized engineering methods.
- Serve as project manager on minor projects or system upgrades.
- Create documentation on all projects and keep documentation updated.
- Design and test new telecommunications or network systems as required by the company.
- Provide budget estimates for construction project requirements.
- Analyze system problems and implement solutions.
- Provide technical input during project planning development.
- Deliver on commitments, performing site visits and coordinating with field personnel when necessary to accomplish assigned work.
- Maintain project timeliness and budgets.
- Train and mentor Level 1 Telecom Engineers.
- Recommend alternative engineering solutions to senior engineers/management to meet business needs. Assist in analyzing and developing standard engineering methods, when requested.
- Perform any additional responsibilities as requested or assigned.
- Lead in the design of numerous transport solutions to support various ongoing projects, including creation or modifications to telecom designs, provisioning/configurations, and implementations.
- Develop complex engineering studies, plans, specifications, calculations, evaluations, and design documents.
- Develop alternative engineering solutions (with management direction) to meet business needs.
- Advanced knowledge of circuit design, optical transport network/carrier Ethernet systems, SONET/TDM, and microwave and radio communication.
- Act as a lead expert in the work group; train and mentor level 1, 2, and 3 telecom engineers.
- Assist in the development of engineering standards based on sound engineering principles and methods to support evolving company needs and objectives.
- Expert knowledge of circuit design, optical transport network/carrier Ethernet systems, SONET/TDM, and microwave and radio communication.
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field; or equivalent work experience. (Typically four years of additional related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a Bachelor's degree. A minimum of two years additional directly related technical experience is required.)
- Three years of telecommunications and/or networking experience.
- Advanced technical knowledge of network and telecommunication technologies, and a thorough understanding of enterprise OT environments.
- Ability to design systems using computer-aided drafting program or equivalent software.
- Knowledge of optical transport network/carrier Ethernet, microwave radios, multiplexers, network switches, and microwave and radio communication.
- Knowledge of information technology terms, equipment, systems, functions and major vendors.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills involving the ability to work cross-functionally to understand requirements, present alternatives, and recommendations.
- Ability to perform effectively in high-pressure situations while maintaining focus and calmness.
- Ability to provide timely assessments with limited information and/or assumptions.
- Proficient with the use of personal computers and automated tools.
- An on-site presence is required to perform collaborative functions of the position.
- A minimum of five years of directly related telecommunications and/or networking experience.
- A minimum of ten years of directly related telecommunications and/or networking experience.
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license or successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
- Engineering experience specifically related to industrial power systems or electric utility power systems.
- Working knowledge of telecom/transport network terminology and systems.
- Working knowledge of serial communication standards, including TIA-232-F (RS-232) and TIA-485(-A) (RS-485).
- A solid understanding of fiber transport and microwave/wireless system technologies, including TDM-based communications systems.
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations and the National Electric Code.
- Experience with IP networking and Carrier Ethernet technologies, including Ciena fiber optic terminals, Cisco IOS, and other IP-based network technologies.
- Knowledge of Ciena 6500 and 3900 series hardware.
- Understanding of ITU G.709, G.8032, G.8262, and IEEE 802.3 network standards.
