GPAC (Growing People & Companies www.gogpac.com) is a national search firm and we have been retained by a growing, vibrant New Jersey foundation, located in northern New Jersey/Morris County, to search for a Controller to help manage over $700M in assets. This foundation provides philanthropic services and advice to those who are looking for support in managing their charitable giving.Controller OverviewReporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Controller will be responsible for oversight of all accounting activities. The candidate must have an auditor/banker mindset, experience with a wide variety of investment and asset types and extensive knowledge of how to reconcile investment brokerage accounts and have nonprofit accounting experience. The Controller will be a partner to the CFO. The Controller is a key contributor to the finance team’s efforts to ensure the accuracy, timeliness and completeness of the Foundation’s financial reporting, analysis of results, maintenance of strong internal controls and successful audits.Responsibilities
  • Oversee all accounting and fund accounting to ensure compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure all necessary accounting entries are booked (in collaboration with the CFO and related support staff) to account for all bank and investment account transactions, stock gifts, payroll entries, collection of all revenues, payment of all expenses and related money movement.
  • Perform monthly account reconciliation and annual financial close and create monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports and analysis for the foundation, it’s board and affiliates in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Assist with cash management and monitoring cash accounts.
  • Lead all audit and tax return reporting, including preparation of supporting documentation and schedules for outside audit and tax firms.
  • Assist leadership in the annual budgeting and planning process; compare to actual results with the intent of identifying and explaining variances.
  • Review and recommend accounting policies and revisions to internal controls.
  • Create a schedule of administrative fees and grant funding due to foundation for support staff to use for collection.
  • Provide client customer service and assist with issue resolution.
  • Cross train so able to backup staff accountants, as needed.
  • Support the CFO in other duties, as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Required: BS or Master’s degree in Accounting. A CPA is preferred but not required.
  • Required: Worked in a similar role for a minimum of 5 years.
  • Required: Possess an auditor/banker mindset.
  • Required: Experience with a wide variety of investment and asset types and extensive knowledge of how to reconcile investment brokerage accounts.
  • Required: Must have experience reconciling numerous accounts with a high volume of transactions and performing month and year end close process.
  • Required: Experience creating budgets and variance analysis
  • Experience with non-profit organizations is a big plus.
  • Highly organized, detail oriented and able to prioritize projects and work independently.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and enjoy working with clients and staff on a daily basis.
  • Good communication skills with the ability to communicate information to all staff.
  • Mastery of Microsoft Office Suite and strong Excel skills are required.
  • Prior experience working with accounting software (Foundant is a plus)
Location: North Jersey/Morris County. Position is in-office 5 days a week initially but converts to hybrid. <
