As a comprehensive acute care facility, the hospital offers a full scope of medical and surgical services, including cardiovascular, general surgery, orthopedics, and women’s services with labor and delivery, alongside a future NICU. Opening with 124 beds, the 455,000 square foot hospital will be able to expand to up to 240 beds. Position Summary:Demonstrates a clear understanding of sterile techniques and maintains a working knowledge of the specialized instrumentation and equipment required for a variety of special procedures.
ResponsibilitiesEssential Functions
 Responsible for the maintenance of an orderly surgical field and for consistently passing instruments and supplies quickly and efficiently to the surgeon. Able to anticipate and prioritize the needs of the various steps associated with the procedure. Takes part in sponge, needle and instruments counts as dictated by the procedure. Responsible for maintaining the surgical specimen in a manner which identifies and preserves them for pathology evaluation. Assists in ordering and stocking of specialty supplies under the direction of management staff and departmental guidelines In collaboration with a Registered Nurse, serves as a technical subject matter expert for at least one tertiary specialty. Provides scrub services for major procedures in at least 2 surgical specialties (independently with high physician satisfaction). Prepares and conducts technical performance-oriented training related to specialty service. Serves as a preceptor to perioperative personnel rotating through the scrub roles associated with their primary specialty(s) and / or second circulates on major tertiary procedures. Demonstrates competency to operate all specialty instruments, supplies, and equipment to at least one tertiary specialty
service. Collaborates with surgeons and proactively addresses case needs when performing duties in either the scrub or second
circulator roles. In collaboration with the clinical leadership, assists in workflow process improvement activities, contributes to organizational effectiveness, and demonstrates career growth and development. Transports and delivers items, equipment, and medications (excluding controlled substances and IV chemotherapy drugs)
throughout the facility. May have limited access to areas storing medications. Maintains reasonably regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies, the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards. Maintains compliance with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.Other Related Functions:
 When directed by clinical specialist, inventories and orders specialty instruments, supplies unique to specialty. Participates in the clinical orientation of SPD staff, serving as a role model and technical resource. Dependable and reliable in performance of Surgical Tech I and II duties. Performs all tasks in a manner that is cost effective participates in departmental performance improvement activities, meets education and certification requirements, upholds Orlando Health philosophy and objectives, contributes to organizational effectiveness, and demonstrates career growth and development.
QualificationsEducation/Training:
High school graduate or equivalent.
Successful completion of:
 Surgical Technology training program; or
 U. S. Military Medical Core Training; or
 Completion of an equivalent on-the-job training programLicensure/Certification:
National certification as Surgical Technologist from one of the following is required:
 Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
(www.nbstsa.org) – renewed every 4 years; or
 Tech in Surgery - Certified by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) (www.ncctinc.com) – renewed annually.Maintains current BLS/HealthCare Provider certification.Experience:
One (1) year surg tech experience in a tertiary service. Technical expert in a least one tertiary service. Competency to scrub major procedures in at least 2 specialty services.
