- Deliver and document MSHA Part 48 training (initial and annual refresher) for underground miners.
- Ensure all workers understand federal Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) standards.
- Conduct site-specific hazard awareness training, including:
- Ground control
- Ventilation systems
- Use of PPE
- Diesel equipment hazards
- Jackleg/stoper drills
- Load-haul-dump (LHD) machines
- Bolters and jumbos
- Scaling equipment
- Explosives and blasting operations (if certified)
- Ensure operators demonstrate hands-on competency before independent work.
- Recordkeeping & Documentation
- Maintain accurate records of:
- Training hours
- Competency checklists
- Certifications and task assignments
- Submit required documentation to MSHA as needed.
- Track retraining needs and expirations for all underground personnel.
- Emergency Preparedness & Procedures
- Train crews in underground emergency protocols, including:
- Escape routes and refuge chambers
- Fire response and mine rescue
- Use of self-rescuers and gas detection equipment
- Lead mock drills and simulations to reinforce emergency readiness.
- On-the-Job Evaluation & Coaching
- Observe underground workers to ensure:
- Safe operation of equipment
- Adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- Proper ground support techniques
- Provide coaching and retraining when unsafe behavior or skill gaps are observed.
- Development of Training Materials
- Help develop or update:
- Training plans and manuals
- SOPs for underground operations
- Toolbox talks and safety meeting materials
- Tailor materials to site conditions (e.g., shaft access, decline entry, ore type).
- 0 years' experience + Degree and/or
- 5 years' experience in underground mining operations
- Familiarity with MSHA health and safety regulations and standards
- Demonstrated ability to evaluate health and safety related risks
- Ability to train and coach others on issues relating to health and safety
- Practical application of Microsoft Office Suite of software (Word, Excel, Project, Outlook)
- Preferred Blue Card Holder and training experience
- Fundamental understanding in Occupational Health
- Analytical skills (ability to collect, analyze information, problem solve, and make decisions)
- Computer literacy (Experience with MS Office, Adobe Acrobat, Web-based Data Systems)
- Demonstrated time management skills
- Ability to organize, prioritize, plan, and multi-task
- Ability to develop and implement OHS programs and systems
- Good understanding of mining and associated processes
- Interpersonal, presentation, and training skills
- Collaboration and influencing skills
- Basic first aid and emergency response knowledge
- Proven ability to lead teams
- Strong understanding of safety systems
- Knowledge and application of leadership skills, incident investigation and risk assessment/management
- Strong knowledge of State & Federal regulations
- Good decision-making skills
