CFD Research's Aerospace Machine Learning Group is developing a framework of modeling and simulation (M&S) and, machine learning (ML) tools for supporting aerospace analysis, research, development, and design optimization. The software framework combines interfaces to aerospace M&S tools with machine learning models and optimization algorithms to support (1) rapid estimation of aerospace vehicle properties; (2) optimal data collection; (3) airframe optimization; (4) guidance navigation and control strategy development, and (5) general multi-disciplinary design optimization. Our team is seeking an engineer to support ongoing development of our framework and its application to modeling, simulation, and analysis of strike missiles for the Air Force Research Laboratory, and other DoD customers. The engineer will be asked to support development and refinement of our modeling and simulation workflows through, developing modular and configurable M&S workflows, containerizing these workflows, and executing the workflows on DoD high-performance computing (HPC) systems. The initial M&S workflow tasking will concentrate on the missile propulsion subsystem. The engineer will develop and use M&S tools to provide propulsion data for 6DOF missile simulation. These simulations will be utilized within formal optimization processes to design propulsion systems, schedule propulsion strategies, shape trajectories, and identify optimal guidance and control strategies.Basic Qualifications:
  • Candidate must be a US Citizen and possess an Active Secret security clearance, or the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
  • Position requires a Bachelor's in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineer, Computer Science (or similar)
  • Proficiency with Python and C++ software languages used in simulations
  • Experience with software development best practices - Git, CI/CD, code linting
  • Experience with propulsion modeling, 6DOF engagement simulation, and/or mission simulation tools
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with the CWS, CADAC, or AFSIM simulation tools
  • Experience with guidance, navigation, and control
  • Experience with aerodynamic modeling tools like Missile DATCOM, CBAERO, OpenVSP
  • Experience modeling or simulating hypersonic vehicles
  • Experience with multi-disciplinary analysis and optimization (MDAO)
  • Masters or PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineer, or similar discipline.
