- Guide students in understanding their subject matter through evidence-based scientific explanations, thoughtful questions, real world models, and hands on investigations
- Place an emphasis on developing scientific thinkers by inviting students to ask questions and by providing a supportive space for students to think their way through difficult scientific concepts
- Help students see the relevance of science in their everyday lives, as well as equip students with the tools necessary to be innovative problem solvers within modern day society
- Prepare all students for success with New York State Regents Science exams
- Plan, organize, and implement an appropriate instructional program that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential.
- Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities.
- Observe, evaluate, encourage and provide feedback on students' progress and development preparing required reports on students and activities.
- Manage student behavior in the classroom in accordance with Preston's Code of Conduct
- Help to foster the school's culture of family, inclusion, and a love of learning and build positive relationships with students, parents, and the school staff
- Participate in school-wide community activities duties including, but not limited to: homeroom mentoring, communal services, liturgy services, retreats, counseling students with academic problems, and supporting extracurricular activities such as social activities, sporting activities, clubs, and student organizations, participating in department and school meetings, and parent meetings.
- Content Knowledge: A strong background knowledge of science is essential to guiding student learning.
- Curriculum: Candidate must be familiar with NYS science curriculum, lab requirements and the New York State Regents standards in the science disciplines. An ideal candidate will be willing to work with grade level teachers across departments in an effort to increase student success in the classroom.
- Feedback: Candidate must be receptive to feedback and willing to adapt practices to address feedback.
- Critical Thinking: Create environments where students have the opportunity to creatively think and apply knowledge.
- Added Value: Each Preston faculty member must add value to the group, both inside and outside of the classroom. The ideal candidate will participate in science related co-curriculars such as the STEM club or Engineering Tomorrow Labs
- In-Class Differentiation: Students come to Preston with a wide variety of background knowledge. The ideal teacher learns individual students strengths and challenges and uses a variety of teaching methods to reach different learning styles.
- Professionalism: Teachers are held to a high standard of professionalism. Many of our parents are working professionals and many have at least one university degree. Therefore, our interactions and communication with the students and their parents must be held to the highest standards. Every parent request and/or e-mail must have a timely (within two business days) and professionally worded response; issues must be addressed and resolved quickly.
- Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution
- Prior teaching experience, high school level preferred
- NYS teaching certificate, preferred
- Must be able to utilize educational technology (Chromebooks, Google Classroom etc.) and incorporate these technologies into their classroom delivery and assignments
- Strong collaboration and teamwork skills
- Skilled at communicating and working effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and with diverse perspectives
