Perform journeyman level mechanical repairs and maintenance on a variety of vehicles, mechanized equipment, and other specialized equipment.
- Perform preventative maintenance, repairs, and alterations of vehicles and equipment by examining vehicles and equipment, utilizing service reports, information from users and other mechanic/machinists to determine necessary design adjustments, fabrication, repairs or maintenance.
- Establish service and maintenance schedules and priorities for development, repairs, alterations, safety checks, etc. to ensure all Section/Area vehicles, equipment and machinery are maintained in a safe and appropriate manner, this includes routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating vehicles, equipment and machinery.
- Inspect, test, and troubleshoot defective vehicles, equipment and machinery to diagnose malfunctions before or after repair or assembly, using engine diagnostic equipment such as computerized test equipment and calibration devices.
- Dismantle and reassemble vehicles, machinery and equipment using hoists and hand tools.
- Weld and fabricate needed parts using lathes, grinders, welders, plasma and oxy/acetylene cutters.
- Rebuild gas or diesel engines.
- Recondition and replace parts, pistons, bearings, gears, and valves.
- Repair, rewire, and troubleshoot electrical systems.
- Repair body damage to vehicles and equipment and prime and paint as needed.
- Research, order, and maintain parts inventory for services and repairs.
- Maintain records of development, alterations, maintenance, preventive maintenance, and service records to track maintenance activities and replacement schedules and makes recommendations concerning retention of vehicles and equipment.
- May travel to other areas of the State to assist in field maintenance and inspection of vehicles, machinery or equipment or render emergency vehicle aid.
- Perform painting tasks for various fire vehicles and apparatuses and ensures accuracy with regard to mixing ratios, application procedures and techniques and drying time.
- Performs proper management of product to ensure efficient use of materials and resources.
- Performs welding and fabrication tasks to repair steel and aluminum panels.
- Utilizes specialized tools including stud guns, plastic welders, heat drying lamps and spot welders to perform painting tasks to perform painting functions and tasks.
- Adheres to emergency response guidelines when performing painting specific duties.
- Adheres to best practices with hazardous materials handling.
