Sanford Federal, Inc. is seeking a contract-based Autopsy Diener (Morgue Technician) to provide non-personal services within the Anatomic Pathology Division of the Laboratory Department at Naval Medical Center San Diego. The Autopsy Diener will work closely with laboratory leadership, autopsy pathologist, and residents, executing staff-level functions and providing direct instruction to resident physicians in the proper preparation, performance, and reporting of autopsies performed at NMCSD.Duty Hours:
- Work may be performed on an intermittent on-call basis, 24 hours a day, any day of the week.
- Schedule autopsy procedures in coordination with lab leadership.
- Report before each case to the Head of Anatomic Pathology Division.
- Estimated 15-20 autopsy procedures annually based on facility trends.
- Assist in various aspects of the autopsy, including external and internal examination, organ extraction and dissection, and brain and spinal cord evaluation.
- Work in conjunction with the Autopsy Pathologist in the quality management program, including SOP review and statistics reporting.
- Provide instruction to pathology residents in autopsy preparation, performance, and reporting.
- Maintain supply levels and request supplies as needed.
- Guide the collection, assembly, and holding of specimens for toxicological study.
- Ensure compliance with infection control guidelines and practice universal precautions.
- Operate equipment in the autopsy room safely and contribute to a safe working environment.
- Assist in the performance of active-duty death identification using dental comparisons and fingerprinting.
- Knowledge of procedures of the Decedent Affairs Office of NMCSD.
- Prior approval from the Chief, Armed Forces Medical Examiner System, to provide coverage of forensic autopsy cases and be designated as a Deputy Medical Examiner.
- Knowledge of jurisdiction and procedures of the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System and San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.
- Experience and knowledge in autopsy techniques, including specialized forensic techniques.
- Ability to lift objects in excess of 50 pounds and stand for prolonged periods.
- Ability to work with infectious and contagious material requiring protective clothing.
- Knowledge of specimen selection, collection, storage, and preservation.
- Ability to modify techniques to adapt to varying situations.
- Knowledge of instruments used for procedures and ability to use them properly.
- Knowledge of tissue fixation and preservation techniques.
- Ability and knowledge in the preparation of tissues and organs for demonstration and museum preservation.
- Knowledge of current civil and military regulations concerning care of the dead.
- Coordination skills with Histopathology Section of the Anatomic Pathology Division for supplies and services.
- Ability to instruct and direct inexperienced personnel.
- Knowledge of methods and techniques to handle infectious and contagious materials and tissues.
- Knowledge of medico-legal autopsy techniques.
