
Transportation Engineer 2 (In-Training) | Multiple Positions

- General inspection in the field on highway construction projects including materials inspection and testing.
- Documentation of construction inspections to ensure projects are in conformance with contract plans, permits, and regulations.
- Data collection and/or survey work in the field.
- Interpret data, identify problems, and develop solutions using sound engineering judgment and guidelines on complicated transportation projects.
- Serve as a designer performing a variety of skilled project development work.
- Assist with design and development of plans, specifications, and estimates working in both the office environment and doing field exploration.
- Develop and check engineering design calculations and drawings.
- Effectively utilize design software to complete designs.
- Education / Professional Foundation: Demonstrated knowledge of civil, structural, environmental, construction, or transportation engineering principles, typically gained through a bachelor's degree in engineering, certification as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT), or equivalent applied work experience. Ability to apply entry-level civil engineering practices, gained through at least one (1) year of professional experience in highway, construction, or related engineering fields.
- Progressive Engineering Experience (TE2 level): Demonstrated ability to perform increasingly complex civil engineering assignments, equivalent to two (2) years of experience as a Transportation Engineer 1, Transportation Technician 3, or related role. Ability to apply engineering fundamentals in the field or office environment, supported by EIT certification and at least one (1) year of related engineering experience.
- Technical Proficiency: Skilled in reading, interpreting, reviewing, and producing contract plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E). Knowledge and proficiency in computer applications, including engineering design software and computer-aided drafting tools. Ability to obtain and maintain the required technical certifications, including General Inspector certification (within six months of hire) and construction materials testing certifications.
- Safety & Field Operations: Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, traverse uneven terrain, and perform duties in confined spaces while maintaining safety protocols. Ability to adjust work schedules to align with contractor activities, including working long hours, nights, and weekends when necessary. Physical ability to safely manipulate and transport up to 40 pounds. Valid driver's license and the ability to operate a state-owned vehicle.
- Communication & Collaboration: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information clearly to contractors, designers, colleagues, support offices, and the traveling public. Ability to foster positive working relationships in collaborative, multidisciplinary environments.

- Project Management experience utilizing P6.

- This is an in-training position that offers a career path and on-the-job training. This position allows you to progress upward through the Transportation Engineer field and achieve the goal class of a Transportation Engineer 2. Candidates will be considered for a Transportation Engineer 1 or Transportation Engineer 2, depending on their qualifications. The annual salary levels for each position are:
- Transportation Engineer 1: $64,776 - $87,048
- Transportation Engineer 2: $71,472 - $96,144
- The salary listed does not include the additional 5% premium pay included for the Transportation Engineer 2 positions based out of King County.
