OverviewMarine Operations Forklift OperatorUIC, Bowhead Transport seeks a seasonal, land/sea-based Forklift Operator to be always responsible for the safe operation of the forklift. The operator will offload and backload cargo on barges and in freight yards under the direction of the Barge Master and Cargo Operations Manager. Other tasks will routinely include lashing, housekeeping on the barge and yards, minor forklift maintenance, and report writing as needed.   • Safely operate various cargo-moving equipment in yards, on barges, and in other unique environments
  • Receiving cargo in preparation for voyage sailings
  • Perform minor equipment maintenance and repairs
  • Loading and securing cargo to the vessel
  • Assist the Barge Master with creating all voyage documentation
  • Extensive and frequent travel throughout Alaska between April & October
  • Other duties as assigned
Licenses, Credentials, Requirements and Experience:
  • 2 years minimum cargo operations experience
  • 2 years minimum operating a 40T forklift on a barge and/or landing craft.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test.
  • Must be able to pass an Air Force background check.
  • The ability to obtain a NSTC (North Slope Training Cooperative) training certification and a BP Transit Badge.
Physical & Environmental Demands:The work environment varies and includes, but is not limited to dock, port, bay, beaches, waterways, office space, equipment rooms, warehouse space, construction zones, and outdoor environments. Work hours may fluctuate outside of normal duty hours. While performing the duties of this job, the individual is:
  • Repetitive movements of the neck, shoulder, wrist, low back.
  • Static postures of the neck, shoulders, wrist, and low back.
  • Walking, sitting, standing, and climbing.
  • Handling of cables, chains, or hooks.
  • Particular attention is paid to other workers who may give hand signals to guide the object's movement through the workspace.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be willing to work all shifts, overtime, weekends, and holidays as needed and required.
  • Perform work in dusty environments and all types of temperature/weather conditions.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, vibration, and noise.
  • Walking on slippery, uneven surfaces.
  • Remote work sites with limited resources and infrastructure.
