The overall responsibility of the Physical Therapist is to provide Physical Therapy (PT) assessments and therapeutic interventions that are necessary for the student to benefit from special education, including compensation, remediation and prevention strategies and adaptations, focusing on functional mobility and safe, efficient access and participation in educational activities and routines in natural learning environments.ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Assist educators in identifying students who may require physical therapy intervention and provide services in accordance with a students’ Individualized Education Program (IEP).
  • Participate as a member of the educational team and assist in program development to incorporate PT strategies into the classroom to benefit all students.
  • Consult with regular education and special education staff regarding implementing interventions for an individual student into the educational setting.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • When requested, participates in multidisciplinary team meeting regarding initial referral of a student, and in the special education referral process
  • Conduct PT assessments that evaluate a student within the educational (natural environment) setting to assess the student’s performance in activities that are applicable to functioning in a classroom and in daily life routines necessary at school, as directed by district policy and procedures. Assessment may include an observation of the student in the educational setting, a review of student records, an interview of appropriate educational staff, and standardized/non-standardized test procedures.
  • Completes the assessment and provides a written report within mandated timeline
  • Reports assessment findings to the IEP Team and helps the IEP team identify the student’s abilities, as well as educational, developmental and functional needs
  • Assists the IEP Team in developing educationally related goals/objectives and/or student outcomes to be included in the IEP
  • Develops and implements the PT intervention plan which may include: assisting teachers in adapting or modifying the student’s classroom environment, materials, and curricula; providing strategies and activities for classroom, group, or home; providing pullout services when inclusive strategies are insufficient to meet the student’s needs
  • Monitors student goals and documents student progress, maintains records as required in the special education process identified in federal, state, and school district regulations and procedures
  • Consults with general and/or special educational personnel and shares PT activities and strategies which can be incorporated into the educational setting
  • When requested, provides inservice training to the educational staff, and/or parents.
  • When appropriate, can assist in the assessment of school facilities and educational activities and makes recommendations to ensure accessibility and reasonable accommodations to school environments for individuals with disabilities as mandated by federal and state laws
  • Participates in Physical Therapy collaboration team meetings and school teams as identified
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be licensed by the Idaho Board of Occupational Licenses to practice as an Physical Therapist in Idaho and maintain a current license;
  • Idaho State Department of Education Pupil Personnel Services certification, Physical Therapist endorsement.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL ABILITIES
  • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions and communicate effectively in person and on the telephone;
  • Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions and review, evaluate and prepare a variety of written documents;
  • Sufficient manual dexterity with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate standard office equipment and a personal computer;
  • Use hands for simple grasping, pushing and pulling, and fine hand manipulations. The work at times requires bending, kneeling, squatting, or crawling on the floor and the ability to lift, carry, push, or pull equipment or objects up to 50 pounds. Must be able to lift and position students weighing 50 pounds or less in wheelchairs, or on/off other equipment.
  • Sufficient personal mobility, flexibility, and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Sufficient ability to travel to various school sites/locations, providing own transportation, and must have a valid Idaho Driver’s License.
