- Assist in selecting, installing, and commissioning specialized laboratory equipment including high temp. furnaces and analytical instruments.
- Plan and implement laboratory upgrades including selection and procurement of equipment, process planning, and support of formal safety/licensing evaluations.
- Lead routine and customized analyses to resolve production issues for on-site manufacturing facility, typically through qualitative elemental analysis utilizing SEM/EDS and quantitative analysis utilizing electron microprobe.
- Design new analysis methods including selection of instruments and authoring of technical procedures.
- Work closely with instrument operators to ensure analysis methods are appropriate.
- Author/maintain area operating procedures and technical procedures.
- Interpret test data and author technical reports.
- Work directly with radioactive materials in a safe manner.
- Participate in fuel development efforts including process development and characterizations.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry or related technical field.
- Self-motivated and directed with keen attention to detail.
- Strong commitment to safety culture and willingness to ensure compliance to all codes and standards.
- Minimum two (2) years engineering experience in a laboratory or manufacturing environment is required. Education experience in a laboratory environment will be considered in lieu of employment experience.
- Must be a U.S. citizen with no dual citizenship.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.
- It is desired that the applicant is at a minimum familiar with some of the following, and interested in learning the theory and practice of new analytical techniques and processing equipment:
- Operation of laboratory equipment including furnaces, gloveboxes, physical vapor deposition (PVD) coaters, hot consolidation methods (HIP, direct current sintering)
- Scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS).
- X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD).
- Wavelength dispersive spectroscopy for quantitative microanalysis.
- Metallographic sample preparation techniques.
- Weld attribute evaluation using standard microscopy techniques.
- Heat treatment processes and operation of high temperature furnaces.
- General laboratory practices including working with hazardous chemicals.
- Quality assurance best practices including documentation and handling of data/records. Experience with dimensional inspection techniques and/or familiarity with interpretation of dimensional data -optical comparator and/or CNC machines - is a plus.
