For more details about the SUNY Old Westbury, please refer to our website at .Job Description:A First-Year Academic Advisor supports the objectives of the First-Year Experience Program and the engagement, success and retention of first-year students. The Advisor teaches our first-year curriculum which promotes academic success by helping students to become intentional learners and develop the intellectual and social skills required to tackle the challenges of college learning and campus living - critical thinking, problem-solving, time-management, financial literacy and self-reflection. First-Year Advisors work with students to develop a clear plan to complete their college and liberal education requirements and form a foundation for their undergraduate degree. Advisors assist students as they transition into their Sophomore Year advisor and/or major advisor.Responsibilities:
- Provide academic advisement to lower-division students as well as Liberal Arts or undecided majors.
- Assist students in choosing a mixture of proficiency courses and general education courses that are compatible with their personal and professional aspirations.
- Teach four to six (4-6) credits in the First-Year Experience program.
- Maintain accurate advisement records.
- Engage in outreach to high-support students.
- Provide workshops that support major and career development.
- Provide workshops on degree-planning and student platforms.
- Attend Campus Open House and other campus events to represent the First Year
- Work closely with the Orientation Office, Transfer Services Office, and Career Planning and Development.
- Liaison with select departments in the School of Arts and Sciences.
- Work closely with School of Education and School of Business.
- Participate on campus committees as directed.
- A minimum of a Master's degree from an accredited college/university.
- A minimum of three (3) years' experience in academic advising or a related area in higher education.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong presentation skills.
- Experience with higher education student databases/systems.
- Experience working with a culturally diverse student population.
- Experience advising first-year students.
- Experience with Ellucian Banner, EAB Navigate.
- Experience teaching at a college level.
