Taking a holistic approach to risk management, the unit offers commercial property, primary casualty (general liability, commercial auto, workers' compensation), lead umbrella, and environmental coverages, as well as parametric natural catastrophe products to small, middle-market and large accounts across target industry verticals in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. Sompo also offers the same level of sophisticated services and coverages to Asian-interest accounts in the U.S. and Mexico.We are seeking the position of a Senior Vice President, E&S Excess Casualty, Western Region Leader to oversee our E&S Excess Casualty portfolio in the Western U.S.. Sompo International Insurance’s U.S. E&S Excess Casualty team brings significant expertise and deep-seated relationships with select appointed wholesale brokers. They offer meaningful in-house capacity, a consistent underwriting approach, timely and efficient turnaround, and a seasoned claims team.Responsibilities include:
  • Manages all underwriting within the West region
  • Prioritization and evaluation of new and renewal submissions to identify those accounts that provide the greatest opportunity for profit consistent with the business plan and corporate profit objectives.
  • Coordinates production underwriting activity regarding traveling/marketing and target production plans. Manages a team of underwriters and drives business results across the Casualty portfolio.
  • Prices and analyzes coverage, structure and exposures on individual risks.
  • Utilizes Data Analytics to enhance underwriting efficiencies and workflow.
  • Authorizes quotes/binders/invoices as appropriate within own authority level.
  • Works closely with the Product Leader to recommend authority levels for underwriting staff; including coverage, policy forms, premium rate plans and underwriting guidelines, loss control guidelines, and distribution.
  • Supports our focus of building strong customer relationships balanced with a strong risk mitigating and compliance-driven culture. Emphasis on proactive monitoring, governance, risk identification and escalation, as well as making sound risk decisions commensurate with the business unit’s risk appetite.
  • Deep underwriting experience across the Excess Casualty line of business.
  • Exercises proper underwriting pricing and discipline to meet profitability goals, complying with underwriting guidelines, systems and procedures.
  • Expands existing portfolio of business by developing existing relationships and new prospective clients.
  • Attends client/broker meetings, lunches, dinners and other social outings as applicable.
  • Engages with, and influences all levels of the organization, drive collaboration and trust, and ensures effective implementation of strategic priorities.
  • Assists in the development of competitive intelligence efforts to track peer activity, knowledge of the markets, competitors, industry trends, products, and distribution methods.
  • Co-creates product launch strategies for new product/enhancements/services, working jointly with Business Unit Leaders, setting key communication strategies for internal and external audiences.
  • Assists in oversight of the drafting and release of Casualty insurance products and services, along with related risk management and event response service offerings that will differentiate Sompo in the marketplace vs. its peers.

Desired Skills & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Broad based insurance industry experience
  • Strong existing relationships with Wholesale Casualty brokers in the Western USA
  • Minimum of 10+ years of Wholesale Casualty experience including prior management experience
  • Creditability and recognizable within the Wholesale Casualty line of business
  • Flexible communication style to fit the situation. You communicate clearly and with a purpose
  • Strong sense of accountability
  • Proven track record of building and maintaining strong business relationships with insureds, agents & brokers.
  • Ability to travel up to 30% of the time, including overnight travel
  • Advanced proficiency with the Microsoft suite of products
Salary Range: $195,000– $275,000 Actual compensation for this role will depend on several factors including the cost of living associated with your work location, your qualifications, skills, competencies, and relevant experience.At Sompo International, we recognize that the talent, skills, and commitment of our employees drive our success.
