GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: Summarize the nature and level of work performed.This position's hours are per diem. The hours will fall within Monday- Friday 7a-Noon.The LIHDI Study is looking for a per diem Mobile Phlebotomist to travel to specified locations. The Mobile Phlebotomist will travel to study participant’s homes to collect blood, obtain vital signs, and anthropometric measurements. The majority of the sites are within the greater Boston area, but there may be some New England travel.The mobile phlebotomist’s responsibilities include maintaining a safe and sterile work environment, assembling all medical instruments and supplies before preparing patients for venipuncture procedures, and measurements.Study participants are adult females.This position reports to the Research Nurse Manager.PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Indicate key areas of responsibility, major job duties, special projects and key objectives for this position. Demonstrates the skills and competence to process/prepare patients for venipuncture/stick. * Validates a positive identification of patient according to department policy.
  • Confirms accuracy of labels and requisitions before beginning procedure.
  • Develops a relationship with the participant to be comforting and to demonstrate confidence for the potential venipuncture/stick.

2. Demonstrates the skills and competence to accurately complete laboratory requisitions or electronic orders. * Completes the laboratory requisition to include all necessary information; to include the legible documentation of his/her phlebotomy code, research billing information, and collection date and time or properly completes electronic order.
  • Follows procedures for obtaining “standing order” information to include, if necessary, completing requisition accurately from telephone orders.
  • Follows all requirements for sample processing per study protocol.
3. Demonstrates the skills and competence necessary to perform the venipuncture/stick. * Selects the best area available for blood drawing.
  • Checks the wound site before leaving the patient.
  • Follows all policies and procedures for the appropriate collection of blood cultures to avoid contamination of specimen.
4. Follows all Infection Control Guidelines throughout the venipuncture/stick procedure. * At all times wears appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Follows all patient precautions and procedures for isolation.
  • Discards all equipment (sharps, glove, etc.) as required.
  • Handwashing between participants.
5. Demonstrates knowledge of correct tube to use for test requested, amount of blood to be drawn, the appropriate procedures for specimen handling to maintain integrity for test requested.PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Continued6. Effectively teaches and trains all new employees, students, and other additional requests for teaching and training.7. Follows all directions as they are applicable to study protocols. * Cooperates with principal investigator and/or supervisor to draw appropriate tubes for tests requested and meet requirements for timed collections.8. Completes phlebotomy check sheets and/or logbooks as required.9. Demonstrates professional customer service skills whenever interacting with a customer. * Answers the telephone with location, name and greeting.

  • Effectively interacts with patients and participant’s families to avoid stress and anxiety.

10. Restocks supplies to ensure adequate amounts available for mobile phlebotomy, and alerts Team Leaders or Supervisor when supply levels are low.11. Set up mobile scale and stadiometer to obtain height and weight.12. Use measuring tape to obtain hip and waist circumference.13. Use electronic machine to obtain blood pressure and heart rate.14. Transport collected information and blood samples to Harvard Longwood Campus in Boston, MA 02115.QualificationsQUALIFICATIONS: (MUST be realistic, neither overstated nor understated, and related to the essential functions of the job.)1. High School diploma or equivalent.2. Phlebotomy certification desired but not required.3. Valid driver’s license and vehicle.SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: (MUST be realistic, neither overstated nor understated, and related to the essential functions of the job.)1. Knowledge and practice of proper aseptic techniques necessary to prevent injury to self and patients.2. Basic knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of veins.3. Knowledge to select appropriate tubes and volumes for test(s) requested.4. Ability to communicate with patients to alleviate fears and anxieties and make them feel comfortable and cared for.5. Physically be able to stand and walk for long periods of time (90% of the hours) and transport supplies and specimens as required.SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: Continued6. Limited computer skills necessary to use the keyboard and mouse to use hospital installed programs as required for specimen collection and processing.7. Validate competencies in areas of: * Venipuncture technique and all blood drawing procedures.
  • Appropriate choice of test tube and required blood volumes.
  • Specimen labeling and participant identification.
  • Customer service skills to include ability to communicate with participants and staff.
