Reports to: Executive DirectorOverviewThe Financial Controller is the key financial leader responsible for the overall financial management and accounting operations of our nonprofit organization. This role is essential for maintaining the financial health, stability, and integrity of the organization. The Financial Controller is responsible for managing all accounting activities, including financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and external audits.This leader will maintain an effective system of accounting records and robust internal controls to mitigate risk, ensure the accuracy of financial results, and guarantee compliance with statutory and regulatory reporting requirements. A successful candidate will be a proven leader, a strategic partner, and a proactive self-starter who excels in a fast-paced environment. They must possess strong business acumen, excellent communication skills, and a superior foundation in finance and accounting.ResponsibilitiesFinancial Management and OversightAccounting and Reporting:
  • Oversee the accuracy and timeliness of all GAAP and Statutory financial reporting.
  • Provide oversight for the day-to-day operations of accounting functions, including Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Grant Billing, and cash reconciliations.
  • Direct the monthly financial close process and prepare internal financial reporting for leadership.
Budgeting and Forecasting:
  • Lead the development and management of the annual operating and capital budgets.
  • Monitor budget performance, provide regular reports to management, and conduct financial analysis to support strategic decision-making.
  • Prepare cash flow forecasts and manage cash flow to ensure organizational stability.
Audit and Compliance:
  • Coordinate and manage all activities related to external audits, preparing necessary financial statements and documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local tax laws, including the preparation and filing of Form 990.
  • Oversee grant accounting and reporting, ensuring strict compliance with all grant terms and conditions.
Strategic Leadership and Organizational DevelopmentInformation Sharing and Collaboration:
  • Disseminate monthly financial results to departmental leaders, promoting financial transparency and accountability.
  • Act as a collaborative partner to other departments, providing financial expertise and support to ensure efficient operations and sound decision-making.
  • Develop and implement strategies to improve financial literacy across the organization.
Succession Planning and Team Leadership:
  • Cultivate a strong, high-performing accounting team by providing mentorship, clear performance goals, and professional development opportunities.
  • Lead succession planning efforts within the finance department to ensure continuity of critical functions and leadership.
  • Identify and nurture talent, empowering team members to take on new challenges and grow their skills.

Change Management and Process Improvement:
  • Lead change management initiatives for finance-related projects, such as system upgrades (e.g., to PeopleSoft), new lines of business, or regulatory changes.
  • Monitor and refine the organization's Chart of Accounts and financial system architecture to enhance reporting clarity and efficiency.
  • Champion process improvements, identifying and implementing solutions that streamline workflows and increase accuracy.
Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance is preferred.
  • CPA or CMA certification is strongly preferred.
Experience:
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of progressive accounting experience, with at least five (5) in the nonprofit sector.
  • Proven leadership and supervisory experience.
Skills and Competencies:
  • Deep understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., PeopleSoft) and financial analysis tools.
  • Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead and collaborate effectively.
