The Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) is located on the 2nd floor of Spartanburg Medical Center next to the Operating Room. The main recovery area has 26 beds (all monitored and includes 2 isolation rooms). The population served is all patients who have had surgery or been anesthetized except CABG and neonatal patients. (Out of OR cases include: endoscopy, MRI, Laser Lead Extractions, blood patch, TEE, Cardioversion, CT, and IR cases). This departments goals are the following:
  • To Meet and sustain Core Measures
  • Educate and transition nursing and medical staff to usage of protocols for better patient outcomes and perioperative throughput
  • Facilitate teamwork amongst all perioperative areas
Under general supervision, the Registered Nurse demonstrates thorough knowledge of therapeutic Perioperative patient care, patient advocacy, clinical pathways/care maps, team dynamics, hospital systems, and serves as a resource for the registered nurse and support staff. Reports to their respective Perioperative Department Manager and to the Director of Perioperative Services. Collaborates with leadership in developing and implementing the Spartanburg Medical Center culture, Vision, Mission and goals.Education
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
Experience
  • Preferred Experience: At least one or more year(s) of service within a Perioperative Department field of nursing, Critical Care or Telemetry
License/Registration/Certifications
  • Current and unrestricted Registered Nurse (R.N) licensure permitting practice in South Carolina
  • American Heart Association Certification as follow per Perioperative Department:
  • BLS, ACLS, PALS
Preferred License/Registration/Certifications
  • Hold a certification with the Perioperative Department field of nursing:
  • PACU; CPAN/CAPA
  • Active member in a Perioperative Department Nursing associates such as: AORN, ASPAN, SGNA, ARIN
The following are some needed characteristics of this RN:
  • Ability to Administer and evaluate pharmacological and other therapeutic treatment regimens within the limitations of licensure and institutional policy
  • Ability to assess assigned patients’ medical history, admitting diagnosis and physician’s orders, evaluating diagnostic data, and interviewing patient and family to determine patient needs
  • Assures continuity of care through effective decision-making resulting in quality patient care
  • Collaborates and works cooperatively with surgeons and other members of the multidisciplinary health care team to ensure efficient perioperative throughput
  • Collaborates with patients, families, and other members of the health care team to assess and determine patient priorities and treatments
  • Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate infection prevention strategies to prevent surgical site infection
  • Documents all aspects of patient care by following established charting procedure to show the patient’s progress or any change in the patient’s condition
  • Identifies appropriate standards of care, and/or collaborative clinical pathways to guide the plan of care
  • Initiates and facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration to enhance outcome
  • Possesses knowledge of the peri-operative and post-operative care needed including dynamic drug therapies for pain management and competency in documentation, assessment and monitoring
  • Follows current guidelines and care methodologies including ERAS
  • Assesses patient condition and care needs and implements a plan of care to meet needs, reduce and control pain, and provide expected outcomes.
  • Providing health education, procedural teaching and discharge education to patients and significant others
  • Provide quality care in accordance with the Standards devised and distributed via American Society of Peri-Anesthesia Nurses
