DescriptionRepairs, modifies, tests and maintains fire fighting apparatus, rescue boats and trailers, and automotive equipment; and performs other related duties as required.Distinguishing Characteristics:This class is distinguished by its primary responsibility for repairing, modifying and maintaining fire fighting apparatus, rescue boats and trailers, and automotive equipment at the independent journey level.Examples of DutiesThe following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position.Diagnoses motor knocks, noises or mechanical failures in fire fighting equipment and apparatus, rescue boats, and trailers;Inspects, adjusts and replaces defective mechanical units in automotive and diesel equipment; times cam shafts and ignition;Repairs and overhauls gasoline or diesel engines, brake systems, transmission, differentials and front and rear axles;Overhauls steering mechanisms and drive shafts; grinds valves;Determines needed repair parts; wires and rewires electrical systems such as starters, distributors, generators, alternators, magnetos;Road tests equipment after being repaired; repairs and maintains high pressure rotary and centrifugal pumps, air compressors, lawn mowers; repairs portable and stationary battery chargers, portable and stationary power plants;Removes, replaces, fabricates and remodels fenders, hoods, panels, radiators for both automotive and other types of fire fighting equipment; mixes and matches paints and applies primer and finish coats using spray guns and brushes;Fabricates various unobtainable parts by operating lathes and grinders;Welds body frames, cracked manifolds, oil pans;Repairs fire hoses and nozzles;Instructs fire equipment operators in the use of new equipment;Responds to fire calls to see that equipment is operating properly.Minimum Qualification RequirementsTraining and Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school, and one year experience as a journey level mechanic which shall have included experience in the repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and equipment.License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license (Type 3) and, prior to completion of probation, possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License (Class A or B with applicable endorsements) and a current Department of Transportation Medical Examiner's Certificate.Knowledge of: theory and principles of the internal combustion engine; the principles of electricity as applied to the electrical systems of automotive equipment; principles and practices of the maintenance and repair of automatic transmissions and hydraulic units; the use of hydraulic oil presses, lathes, gauges, gear or bearing pullers, sanding machines, spray guns, testing equipment, and other mechanical implements used in the trade; operation of various types of fire equipment sufficient to conduct performance tests; the occupational hazards and precautionary measures applicable to the trade.Ability to: plan, lay out and set up work; locate and adjust mechanical defects in gasoline and diesel driven automotive equipment; learn the maintenance and repair of non-automotive equipment such as rotary and centrifugal pumps, air compressors, lawn mowers, and air powered construction equipment; make repairs using modern tools, equipment and procedures; do welding and simple body and fender repairs; interpret and work from rough sketches or blueprints as well as from oral and written instructions; work with dexterity and safety; handle weights and loads.Health and Physical Condition:Persons seeking appointment to positions in this class must meet the health and physical condition standards deemed necessary and proper to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.Physical Effort Grouping: HeavyAPPLICATIONS MAY BE FILED ONLINE AT:If you have never applied for a job using the NEOGOV system, you must create an account.
