Job SummaryRisk Management & Safety at Auburn University is excited to begin the search for a Safety & Health Specialist!This position provides essential operational support in implementing Auburn University's Radiation Safety Program and supports AU research and academic programs that use radioactive materials and radiation-producing equipment to promote radiation safety and facilitate regulatory compliance. The role requires a thorough understanding of radiation safety principles, strict adherence to regulatory requirements, and the ability to implement effective hazard control measures to facilitate a safe and compliant research environment. Key responsibilities include conducting safety surveys, processing, and delivering incoming radioactive packages, shipment of radioactive materials, calibration of radiation detection equipment, disposing of radioactive waste, overseeing the dosimetry program, maintaining personnel exposure records, and delivering safety training sessions.
Essential Functions1. Radiation Safety Program:Provide essential operational support for the University's Radiation Safety Programs by assisting in the implementation of regulatory requirements and best practices to maintain compliance and foster safe laboratory and research environments. This may involve advising and offering technical consultation to university administrators, faculty, and staff on a wide range of radiation safety principles. Key responsibilities include conducting routine radiological safety surveys to identify and mitigate potential hazards, calibrating radiation detection instruments to ensure accurate monitoring, as well as receiving and the shipment of radioactive materials.2. Radioactive Waste: Process radioactive waste and maintain thorough and accurate records of all waste disposal activities. Collaborate with the radiation safety team to conduct annual quality control checks for accuracy and consistency.3. Dosimetry Program: Manage dosimetry program to ensure accurate monitoring of occupational radiation exposure. The role also involves generating reports, obtaining historical occupational exposure records, and communicating institutional exposure data with stakeholders to support compliance as applicable.4. Laser Safety Program: Support implementation of Laser Safety Program. This includes staying current with laser safety regulations, updating the Laser Safety Manual, maintaining an accurate inventory of laser systems, conducting routine safety inspections to identify potential hazards, and recommending effective control measures to mitigate risks associated with lasers.5. Technical Consultation and Training: Provide technical consultation to university administrators, faculty, and staff on radiation safety topics and related services. Develop and deliver training sessions as needed and maintain training records.6. Strategic Planning: Contribute to Laboratory and Research Safety strategic plans through participation in planning and execution of work goals and objectives. Monitor progress of assigned objectives. Contribute towards Program / Departmental Strategic Goals and Projects as needed.

  • Degree in physical science discipline such as Health Physics, Nuclear or Radiation Science, Physics, Engineering, Chemistry or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent analytical organization, time management, communication, presentation and interpersonal skills, and ability to work on multiple projects.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of adult training methodology, needs assessment, and evaluation methodology.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical procedures, or government regulations.
  • Willingness to receive training in new research and safety areas as needed.
  • Having an advanced degree and/or CHP certification might be an advantage.
