TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Prepares bus routes and schedules;
Assigns drivers to regular and special field trips;
Calls and assigns substitute drivers;
Maintains time records for payroll purposes;
Maintains trip records and prepares transportation reports, including accident reports, bus mileage and gas and diesel fuel use;
Trains new drivers and assigns them to individual routes;
Checks the operation and cleanliness of buses;
Receives and responds to or refers complaints or questions concerning transportation services, parent concerns, stop changes, etc.;
Manages special transportation activities by arranging for drivers and buses;
May advise the responsible school district official of road hazards which may necessitate school closings or delays;
May operate a school bus on a regular route or as a substitute drive;
Aids in resolving student disciplinary problems on school buses;
Keeps continuing check on the maintenance and operation of all school district buses;
May perform Driving Reviews and Behind-the-Wheel road tests;
Consults with Transportation Supervisor regarding unusual problems.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of driving skills and the operation of buses; thorough knowledge of safety procedures, traffic laws and motor vehicle regulations applicable to school bus operation; working knowledge of automotive repair methods, costs, tools and terminology; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; ability to keep and maintain computer records and reports; ability to get along well with others including the public; ability to operate a school bus; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
