The Opportunity:

The Senior Hardware Design Engineer will work with several groups at QRC, including the engineering, production, and quality teams to accelerate new hardware feature integration for our next generation RF measurement products. Ability and a passion to prevent and solve engineering problems is a key aspect of this role. The Senior Hardware Engineer’s primary responsibility is to participate in and lead design tasks including requirements analysis, specification generation, interface definition, component selection, simulation, schematic capture, and circuit board layout.

Fredericksburg, VA is the ideal location for this position, but remote work is an option for the right candidate.

Essential Duties:
  • Candidate will be responsible for designing architectures, subsystems, boards, and components
  • Participate in and lead design tasks including requirements analysis, specification generation, interface definition, component selection, simulation, schematic capture, and board layout
  • Participate in simulation, testing, and troubleshooting of designs, including bench testing and debugging using test equipment
  • Apply hands-on in-depth knowledge of test equipment including oscilloscopes, signal generators, vector network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, and power meters
  • Develop test plans and procedures for designs
  • Participate in and lead design reviews
  • Manage schedule, cost, and technical responsibility at the system and board level
  • Identify and work with suppliers of components and subsystems
  • Learn methods from analysis of industry products and apply lessons learned to innovative product designs
  • Candidate must have extensive design experience in high-speed digital, analog, and power products, and some knowledge of RF systems
  • Must have in-depth understanding of appropriate PCB materials and knowledge of circuit layout techniques
  • Candidate should have at least 5 years of PCB layout experience on shippable products
  • In-depth experience with Altium Designer over the last two years is strongly desired, including detailed knowledge about the software, its limitations, and its features
  • Candidate should be proficient in PCB part placement, footprints, gerber files, maintaining part libraries, and designing for ease of manufacturing and test
  • Direct experience routing high-speed digital signals (PCIe, USB, Gigabit, LVDS, clocks) and low-speed digital signals (RS-232, I2C, SPI), analog signal and power, and RF signals (up to 6 GHz) is required
  • Experience routing both single-ended and differential pairs is required
  • Candidate should be able to optimize designs for PCBs and flex circuits for density, cost, thermal issues, and other factors
  • Should have an understanding of EMC design guidelines for PCBs and systems
  • Should have strong written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Must be able to work independently and produce measurable results
  • Candidates must be eligible to obtain a security clearance when sponsored by QRC
Preferred Skills or Experience:
  • BS in Electrical Engineering or similar work experience
  • 6 or more years of experience in Electrical Engineering, with demonstrated RF skills, or 10 or more years of experience in the design and testing of printed circuit boards for RF/microwave/high-speed digital frequencies
  • Past experience with designing ruggedized hardware is a plus
  • Technical experience in the areas of signal processing, signal analysis, direction finding, geolocation, embedded systems, antennas, or communications systems is a plus
  • Previous experience producing products rapidly in a small team environment is a strong plus
  • Experience with Altium Vault is a plus
  • An active US government security clearance is a plus
