DescriptionSummer High School Internship ProgramThis recruitment is open to high school students with a graduation year of 2024 or 2025.
These internships are designed to be filled by high school students for the purpose of learning about work in state government and, specifically, at the Washington State Health Care Authority (HCA). Interns will have different experiences depending on their work unit. All interns will learn about state government and the specific work of their unit. Each intern will be trained on necessary skills and assigned work tasks that further enhance their learning experience.All HCA employees will apply an equity lens to their work, which may include but is not limited to all analyses of core business and processes.About the internship positions:Start date: Monday, July 8, 2024
End date: Friday, August 30, 2024
Pay rate: $16.52/hour
Location: Cherry Street Plaza, 628 8th Ave SE, Olympia, WA 98501
Hours:
  • 10 hours per week during regular HCA business hours of Monday-Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm.
  • Schedule will include 9:00am-12:00pm on Thursdays.
  • The remaining schedule will be arranged between each intern and their supervisor(s).
  • Interns will be allowed up to one week's worth of unpaid leave due to pre-planned vacation or other commitments.
Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery - Adult Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Intern
The Adult SUD intern will learn about various aspects of mental health and substance use disorder, including legislation, evidence-based practices, and how diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging factor into the work. This intern will perform tasks such as taking notes at meetings, researching different SUD topics, and contributing to their supervisor's ongoing projects.Good for students interested in learning about mental health, substance use disorders, and how legislation affects these subjects.Employee Resources Division - Facilities Intern
The Facilities intern will work alongside full-time staff who ensure the Cherry Street Plaza facility operates smoothly. This will include setting up conference rooms, stocking office and janitorial supplies, and processing service requests from staff.Good for students who like to work with their hands and prefer to be away from a desk during their shift.Employee Resources Division - Human Resources Intern
The HR intern will be exposed to all areas of human resources, including operations, recruitment, protected leave, labor relations, employee relations, operations, learning and development, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. This intern will perform some administrative tasks as well as develop one research project on an area of interest in this field with guidance and support from unit staff.Good for students with an interest in learning how organizations support their employees.Medicaid Programs Division - Business Operations Intern
The Medicaid Programs Business Operations intern will learn about business functions in the Medicaid Programs Division, including aspects such as project management, formal communications, and diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. This intern will support MPD operations by preparing meeting agendas, taking notes, and assisting with preparation for the division's all-staff meeting in August.Good for students interested in learning about Medicaid and coordinating events and meetings.Office of the Director Intern
The Office of the Director's intern will be exposed to top-level agency leadership and the important work they do leading HCA. This intern will perform administrative tasks such as assembling binder, travel, and other prep materials for meetings and assisting with long-term projects including file archiving and SharePoint site updates.Good for students interested in the behind-the-scenes work done to support executive leadership.These positions are not eligible to telework, as physical in-office presence is required to perform essential functions.DutiesSome of what you will do:
  • Assist staff with routine division business while learning about the impact of public sector work through participation in the day-to-day office environment.
  • Take notes during meetings.
  • Review documents and assist with record-keeping work within the section.
  • Support divisional special projects such as planning and coordinating in-person staff meetings or events, agencywide events, performing online research to gather information and provide summaries, and organizing physical or electronic records or files.
  • Attend one or more required trainings.
  • Attend hour-long weekly meetings with HR staff to ensure a positive experience, answer questions, and provide more information and orientation to the business of the agency.
  • Participate in agency programs or events.
  • Attend informational interviews with agency leaders and staff.
QualificationsRequired qualifications:At the time of application, must be a high school student with an expected graduation date of 2024 or 2025. i.e. high school junior or seniorAble to work on-site in Olympia for 10 hours per week between July 8 to August 30, 2024.Able to commit to a schedule that includes 9:00am-12:00pm on Thursdays.Preferred qualifications:
  • Interest in learning about careers in state government demonstrated in your cover letter.
  • Specific interest in the work and subject matter in one or two of the internship options.
  • History of reliability in work, activities, clubs, or teams.
  • Ability to use a computer to complete work such as creating a document and typing.
