DescriptionThe St. Louis County Government Department of Public Health is looking for a Forensic Investigator to join their team. The Office of the Medical Examiner is responsible for investigating all sudden, unexpected, suspicious, unnatural or violent death or deaths that represent a threat to public health. The Investigators will evaluate and investigate reportable deaths according to defined policies and procedures to meet state and local laws.The work schedule will consist of swing and overnight shifts working 10 hour shifts 4 days per week which could include weekends and holidays. The swing shift is 10 am - 8 pm, and the overnight shift is from 8 pm - 6 am. However, this schedule is subject to change at the discretion of the chief investigator, which could result in working dayshift (6 am - 4 pm) and/or the afternoon shift (2 pm - midnight). There is a 10% shift differential for evening and night shifts.The starting salary for this position will be between $55,536 - $66,643 annually and will be based on experience and qualifications. For more information regarding this program, please visit .Examples of DutiesEssential Function ExamplesAssess death reports to determine the extent of investigation required to close any given case.Perform scene investigations and determine associated facts related to death to assist in the determination of cause and manner of death.Establish scientific positive identification of decedent, communicate with family members to notify them of decedent's death and determine disposition of remains.
Share investigative, forensic and medical information with involved agencies.Perform other duties as required or assigned.Minimum QualificationsCandidates should possess a Bachelor's degree in Forensic Science or related field with at least one year of related experience. A current, valid driver's license is also required. Prefer law enforcement investigative experience, emergency medicine, medical examiner internship experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Prefer completion of seminars related to death investigation.Certification by the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI) is required within the first two years of employment.Additional InformationSELECTION AND APPOINTMENT: A selection committee will evaluate the qualifications of each applicant which will include recentness and appropriateness of the applicant's education and experience, answers to the supplemental questions, results of employment references investigated and any other appropriate information available.The selection committee will admit to the interview only those persons who possess the most job related qualifications and may establish admittance criteria beyond the minimum qualifications stated above. The interview will comprise 100% of the applicant's earned grade. A candidate must earn a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview to be eligible for appointment. After initial interviews with the selected candidates are conducted, an email will be sent to the address on file with instructions on how to complete and submit a Conviction Questionnaire. Candidates have 3 days to complete the required questionnaire.The five top ranking candidates, based on the final grade, will be certified to the Department Director/Appointing Authority who will make the final decision.All applicants conditionally offered a merit position will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Screening will be performed by a reputable clinical laboratory.
