POSITION DESCRIPTION:Serves as heavy equipment operator responsible for Inspecting equipment/machinery for safe day-to-day operation and general maintenance needs. Performs daily and operator maintenance and repairs to equipment. Operator training and a Class A Commercial operator's license (CDL) is required and license renewals on all equipment maintained by employee. Trains subordinate operators on operation of equipment. Operates gasoline or diesel heavy equipment, such as bulldozers, dump trucks, scrapers, loaders, excavators, tractors, front loaders, and back hoes, to excavate, move and grade earth. Responsible for cleaning, maintaining, and securing all equipment after usage. Performs maintenance (ditching, grading, shaping, and covering) on all unimproved surfaces such as ranges, bivouac sites, helicopter landing zones, training areas, maneuver lanes, through access roadways, and property lines. Digs drainage ditches and trenches. Emplaces riprap, grass seed, matting and various other methods of erosion control. Must track equipment maintenance, fuel consumption, and usage to ensure adequate supply. Prepare bill of materials for work orders and projects. Read and interpret mechanical schematics and shop drawings for equipment repair and fabrication projects. Control, secure, inventory and dispatch tools, materials, and equipment. Maintain equipment maintenance preventative and routine maintenance logs. Perform quality control and determine acceptability of grounds maintenance work and projects. Performs routine flatwork welding to metal for various fabrications and repairs to existing welds. Must have knowledge in the use of gas torches, wire feed mig-welder, portable stick welder, and various metal cutting tools. Constructs lateral ditches, berms, and other erosion control structures within the training areas maneuver trail and bivouac sites. Training area maintenance includes applying various pesticides and herbicides to bivouac sites and staging areas. Coordinate, as required, with installation facilities engineers for maintenance of training facilities to provide safe operating conditions. Assists the maintenance officer with maintaining and updating all equipment records to include all services preformed and parts repaired on each single item equipment. Perform daily, weekly, and monthly inspection as recommended by equipment manufacture. Operate recovery assets to remove broken equipment from ranges and training area. Performs duties of facility (ECO) Environmental Compliance Officer.POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
Must possess a comprehensive knowledge of all range operations and policies. Must have a combination of education and/or experience which demonstrates proficiency in the operation of heavy equipment. Must possess military, or civilian equivalent, heavy equipment operator licenses or certificates. Must have knowledge of all applicable safety laws and regulations. Must maintain a valid driver's license and attend State Employee Driver Training Class. Must have the ability to lift 25 pounds unassisted, including above the shoulder. Must be comfortable working near firearms and on firing ranges. Must be able to obtain Common Access Card (CAC). Must be able to obtain or have and maintain a Louisiana Class A CDL.GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must have a valid Driver's License, Social Security Card and Birth Certificate.
  • Must be available to report to duty during emergency or disaster situations for extended hours over an extended period of time. Other periodic travel may be required.
  • Must meet physical requirements to perform functions of the position.
  • Must attend/complete all Louisiana Military Department (LMD) annual training and other training required for the position.

  • All LMD positions require in-office attendance. This is not a remote position.

  • To become an employee of the LMD you must be a current member of the Louisiana National Guard or eligible for membership in the Louisiana State Guard.
