Minimum Knowledge and Experience:
  • Experience in a Technical role within a complex railroad organization 2 years + of demonstrated experience.
  • Strong knowledge of traction and rolling stock, fault finding, and modern approaches to equipment maintenance.
  • Demonstrated acumen with regulatory requirements affecting passenger railroad operations including FRA and OSHA regulations.
  • Key personal traits; collaborative, forward thinking, proactive, resilient, sound judgement, innovative where it’s required, driven by a relentless pursuit of excellence.
Skills:

Key Accountabilities (Essential Job Duties):
  • Demonstrate understanding and adhere to the KCS principals of Employee Engagement, Operational Excellence & Safety, Customer Satisfaction, Corporate Social Responsibility and Economic Performance.
  • Provide managerial leadership to the Mechanical Department employees. This includes individual coaching, development, and managerial support.
  • Act as a rolling stock technical subject matter expert to provide technical assistance to transportation crews and mechanical personnel.
  • Lead and support technical investigations into significant incidents and ensure any actions identified are followed up and closed out.
  • Interrogate downloads to support the determination of root cause in incidents and provide verification of correct operation of equipment.
Continual Improvement:
  • Assist the Technical Team to determine the correct attribution of incidents and the root cause of failures attributable to the mechanical department and support the production of weekly and monthly performance reports.
  • Drive improvement of safety performance in sync with annual safety plan for the Mechanical Department.
  • Plan for and direct operations during service disruptions and periods of extreme weather to ensure safe working environment.
  • Reduce the number of repeat defects by:
  • Producing minimum scope of work documents and check lists to provide structured guidance to support fault finding of equipment.
  • Reviewing the work done to close out defects to ensure that the remedial action is appropriate given the reported failure mode.
  • 2nd/3rd occurrence on-site to oversee inspections/repairs confirming root cause has been identified and addressed.
  • Identify problem areas and recommend equipment service changes and/or modifications through investigation and detection of equipment defects.
  • Work with the Technical Team and MBTA to develop prototypes and oversee first of class installs.
  • Work with original equipment manufacturers and suppliers to determine root cause of failures and identify areas of improvement.
  • Generate work instructions and other documents in support of modifications and engineering change process.
Training and Mentoring:
  • Support the training department in the development of training courses and materials and provide informal training, instructional sessions, and hands on training to employees.
  • Mentoring of technicians to include the following:
  • Development of additional training requirements to be delivered by third parties
  • Direct coaching when fault finding or reviewing approaches to carrying out tasks
  • Training in the use of root cause tools and techniques
General Requirements:
  • Document key processes to ensure they are consistently delivered and there is no uncertainty about the scope of work that is required.
  • Support the delivery of Keolis and MBTA Projects as directed.
  • Support the other members of the Technical Team as required.
  • Comply with all safety rules and procedures and report all hazards as required
  • Carry out other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions (including Physical Demands):
  • This role is primarily Monday – Friday Day Shift but may require occasional overnight or weekend support.
  • There is a mixture of office work and on equipment troubleshooting.
  • Frequent travel to Commuter Rail locations other than BET is expected.
