This highly strategic and technical role is responsible for designing, developing, and leading the implementation of scalable, high-performance payment systems across our fintech ecosystem. As a key engineering leader, you will influence architecture across teams, shape engineering best practices, and mentor engineers while contributing hands-on to mission-critical software platforms.You will brings deep fintech experience, expertise in modern backend languages and a strong understanding of payment infrastructure-including traditional rails (ACH, wires, RTP), card processing and tokenization. You thrive in a collaborative, fast-paced environment and bring a passion for building secure, compliant, and highly available systems.As the Principal Architect, Payments Infrastructure, you will:
  • Lead architecture and implementation of backend services supporting payment acquisition, settlement, reconciliation, balancing of ledgers, fraud and risk evaluation, and graceful exception handling for all use cases.
  • Integrate directly with network of payment facilitators, global banking partners, and card networks.
  • Build support for banking rails including ACH, Wires, Reverse Wires, instant payment networks in all available markets, card processors (ISO 8583 standards), and digital currencies.
  • Define and enforce best practices in coding, architecture, documentation, security, and system design.
  • Partner cross-functionally with frontend, data, infrastructure, compliance, and business teams to deliver secure, performant end-to-end payment solutions.
  • Design and build distributed systems with 99.999% availability, low-latency, and high-throughput requirements.
  • Mentor and guide engineers in architecture, design patterns, and cloud-native development; foster a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Contribute to long-term strategy for scaling systems, improving developer productivity, and enabling business agility.
You Are Likely to Succeed If:
  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering, with 8+ years in backend development for fintech or high-scale payments platforms at global banks and/or global payment facilitators.
  • 3+ years in a Principal, Staff+, or Lead Architect role, with demonstrated influence over large-scale architecture and systems in payment systems.
  • Led the design and scale of complex payment infrastructure to support high-volume transactions and business growth.
  • Implemented robust systems for payment acquisition, routing, settlement, reconciliation, and ledger management.
  • Delivered seamless integrations with major card networks including Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express, with a focus on tokenization for security.
  • Built and optimized payment flows across bank rails including ACH, Direct Debit, RTP, FedNow, Wires, Reverse Wires, and FX systems, with experience in International NACHA and ISO 8583 formats.
  • Developed APIs and SDKs to enable flexible payment orchestration and scalable treasury management solutions.
  • Strong proficiency in modern programming languages such as Node and JavaScript/React/React Native.
  • Expertise in event-driven systems, data consistency models, and building for resilience, compliance, and latency sensitivity.
  • Strong understanding of Agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban) and a passion for modern DevOps and CI/CD practices.
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to translate complex technical ideas to product managers, enterprise clients, and partners.
Preferred Qualifications & Skills:
  • Familiarity with cross-border payment rails, cross-currency payments, stablecoins and CBDCs, or tokenized money platforms.
  • Familiarity with compliance frameworks (KYC/KYB, AML), risk scoring, and exception-based operational workflows.
  • Experience implementing currency exchange for multicurrency payments.
