- Plans, schedules, supervises and reviews the work of network and systems technical staff and activities.
- Coordinates all resources assigned to a project, from initiation to implementation.
- Recommends selection of staff; trains staff in work procedures and provides technical assistance in difficult and unusual technical situations as required.
- Performs employee performance evaluations, counsels employees and recommends initial disciplinary action and other personnel decisions.
- Provides input into goals, objectives and budget development for the division.
- Establishes priorities, work schedules and project plans; tracks project status and reviews work in progress to assure conformance to plans and systems standards.
- Ensures that system technicians understand their respective system programs thoroughly to include file manipulation and editors, read status information, support program languages such as compilers, assemblers, interpreters; program loading and execution; debugging; communications among different computers, application programs, and perform SYSGENs.
- Ensures reports and analysis on system availability, system resource utilization, and documentation are complete.
- Comments on design of fault tolerant, scalable systems.
- Recommends the selection or adaptation of computer systems or elements available within the industry.
- Trains and supervises system technicians and network analysts engaged in the installation and improvement of software and operating systems.
- This supervisory level position provides a wide range of highly specialized technical functions in the design, installation and maintenance of the County's computers and wide area network.
- Maintains a current knowledge of software systems, computing and network platforms, and the general state of the art.
- Creates project plans for all system programmer and network projects for management and Communicates status of projects customers.
- Assigns work requiring research and evaluation of computer and network equipment, estimating costs, and making recommendations for vendor selection.
- Ensures analysts and system technicians create and maintain logical, physical and protocol maps, electronic and hard copy backups of all equipment configuration parameters, and documentation standards and procedures.
- Coordinates network services, technical and maintenance support with outside service providers.
- Assigns tasks to manage the computers and network using automated systems to identify trouble spots and to remotely view and administer routers, servers, hosts and other network and computer peripheral equipment.
- Tracks trouble calls from customers that relate to computer and network problems; trains and coordinates with technical support staff and help desk staff in troubleshooting procedures.
- Provides additional level of support in the area of Novell, NT, UNIX, IOS, and MVS operating systems.
- Consults with departments and provides technical expertise regarding future resource requirements.
- Tracks utilization and trends.
- Assists in development of strategic plans to leverage emerging technology to support future county network and computing needs.
- Prepares special reports and ensures necessary performance data is captured.
- Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the unit's service to its customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a work team.
- Uses standard office equipment; drives a personal or County motor vehicle in order to visit various job sites and attend off-site meetings.
