In this role, you will manage and enhance the telecommunications infrastructure at UT Southwestern, ensuring robust and efficient communication systems through expert-level maintenance, troubleshooting, and innovative solutions. We are looking for someone with demonstrated ability to manage and excel in multi-platform telecommunications environments, with a proactive approach to problem-solving and project management, excellent communication skills, is capable of discussing technical details with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, and leadership skills with a proven track record of managing teams and projects, ensuring meticulous attention to detail and task completion.Experience and EducationMinimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, and six (6) years’ experience in installing, programming and maintaining hardware and software associated with the successful operation of a large VoIP system, preferably a Unify OpenScape Voice.
  • Strong preference for candidates with six or more years of experience in multi-platform telecommunications environments.
  • Experience in telecommunication network design and traffic engineering is strongly preferred.
  • Extensive experience with various phone systems including Unify OpenScape Voice, Cisco Call Manager, Cisco WebEx Calling, Avaya, Microsoft Teams, and Mitel. • Industry certifications such as CCNA, CCNP, or equivalent in networking and telecommunications are highly desirable.
Specific Job Duties
  • Lead the installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of complex telecommunications equipment, including but not limited to PBX switches, VoIP systems, and voice mail systems across various platforms such as Unify/ATOS OpenScape, Cisco Call Manager, Cisco WebEx Calling, Avaya, Microsoft Teams, and/or Mitel.
  • Provide expert-level technical guidance and project leadership, setting technical standards for data and voice connectivity.
  • Perform comprehensive feasibility studies for telecommunications equipment, employing advanced diagnostic tools for preventive maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Design and implement network topologies and provide comprehensive documentation for telecommunications systems, emphasizing multi-platform integration and efficiency.
  • Monitor, assess, and optimize the performance of telecommunications systems, recommending and implementing enhancements and expansions.
Other Job Duties
  • Provides for the installation, troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining of complex telecommunications equipment, including PBX switches, VoIP systems, voice mail systems, communication circuits, and the equipment and applications associated with them. Acts as technical lead in the absence of the manager.
  • Determines the methodology for installing telephone service, and appropriateness of significant equipment and/or software changes.
  • Develops and approves technical standards and interfaces for connectivity of data transmission devices to the telecommunications system.
  • Monitors and configures telecommunications systems to assess technical performance and makes recommendations for system enhancements and expansion.
  • Evaluates and makes recommendations for various telecommunications products and services specifically as they relate to the core switching equipment, voice mail systems and ancillary devices; making recommendations as to which will work best within our environment.
  • Performs feasibility studies related to core switching equipment and ancillary devices; uses electronic testing, metering, and monitoring devices and applications for in-depth preventative maintenance and to locate trouble, test switches, trunks and links to restore or cause to be restored any service and/or equipment identified as faulty.
  • Reads and follows schematic diagrams and technical notes to install hardware and software, perform moves and changes to PBX system, VoIP system and station equipment, as well as voice mail systems and communication circuits. This includes the configuration and installation of OpenScape Branch, circuit cards and making appropriate software configuration changes to accommodate additional equipment.
  • Monitors system statistics and alarms and develops system usage reports on core switches, voice mail system, trunks and all ancillary services.
  • Diagnoses and corrects service disruptions, to maintain, change and repair OpenScape Voice, PBX system hardware/software and associated communications equipment; handling any voice and data network problems resulting from traffic interruptions that could not be resolved by the Telecommunications Analysts.
  • Assists other technicians and analysts in finding and resolving voice and data problems; escalates and tracks issues with various telecommunications manufacturers' and providers' technical support organizations when issues are not able to be resolved in-house.
  • Evaluates communications systems failures and prepares root cause analysis reports for upper management.
  • Prepares reports and maintains records on system capacities and system status. Acts in a lead capacity over other Telecommunications Technicians providing leadership and assigning work and direction; assists in training and mentoring of other Technicians, Analysts, and end users.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIESWork requires ability to read, write and resolve complex technical problems. Work requires ability to understand data networks and use digital test equipment. Work requires knowledge of fiber optic cabling. Work requires ability to use light meters, OTDR test equipment data scopes, patch panels, modems, concentrators, call detail recording applications and equipment, various call routing applications, busy studies, network engineering, queuing theories and statistics. Work requires ability to determine approaches to work problems based upon specialized technical knowledge. Work requires telephone and personal contact with faculty and staff to coordinate resolution of system problems. Work requires telephone and personal contact with affiliated hospitals, clinics, equipment vendors, and maintenance personnel to coordinate resolution of problems or installation of specialized equipment. Work requires ability to stand for long periods of time and/or lift up to 50 pounds. Work requires ability to analyze, organize, and effectively present data to management.
