is a National Science Foundation (NSF)-supported Science and Technology Center (STC). COMPASS seeks to discover new science, technologies and techniques related to complex particle systems. The outcomes of COMPASS activities will lead to the better understanding of properties of complex particle systems enabling new technologies or improved processes. The centers education and broadening participation activities will enhance participation of women, underrepresented minorities, and persons with disabilities in STEM disciplines.The centers outreach effort is anchored in promoting cognitive diversity, hence at the core of its outreach is collaboration with scientists from Africa. COMPASS is a partnership between the University of Michigan, North Carolina State University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Chicago State University, Northeastern University, Wayne State University, and University of South California. COMPASS headquarters are in Ann Arbor, Michigan, but the diversity coordinator will be based on NC State's Centennial Campus.
Essential Job DutiesThe primary purpose of the COMPASS Diversity Coordinator is to implement the Center Broadening Participation plans by leading and managing the day-to-day outreach and recruitment efforts and helping to train and mentor students, enabling their retention and graduation. The Diversity Coordinator is responsible for planning and coordinating outreach and recruitment events, data tracking and analysis on the success of the events and developing new strategies for growing diversity in the graduate student, undergraduate student, fellows, and postdoctoral applicant pools.The Diversity Coordinator is responsible for providing informal and formal professional mentorship for COMPASS undergraduate students, graduate students, fellows, and postdoctoral scholars. The Diversity Coordinator provides additional support for the educational and integration goals and activities of COMPASS, particularly as it relates to the training, retention, and graduation of students. The diversity coordinator will also handle the center's effort to collaborate with researchers in Africa. They will assist in recruitment, on-boarding and tracking progress of teams coming from or going to African partner institutions.Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Provide strategic leadership in the areas of diversity and inclusion
  • Plans, implements, and coordinates recruitment initiatives, involving senior investigators and students in such activities on a regular basis
  • Designs and carries out a marketing plan that reaches a diverse group of students nationally using e-mail, mailings, seminars, the centers website, or other social media.
  • Provides content for the website that is relevant to recruitment and partnership with Africa
  • Leads COMPASS senior investigators and students to build relationships with student groups at their institutions that promote the academic success of individuals from underrepresented groups in STEM disciplines and tracks the evolution of these relationships for reporting purposes
  • Advocates for cognitive diversity across campuses
  • Ensures equitable placement of African visiting scientists across the member institutions
  • Ensures equitable placement of COMPASS scientists across partner institutions in Africa
  • Assists with visa processing related to COMPASS partnership with African scientists
  • Strengthens existing relationships and fosters new relationships with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs)
  • Identifies, recommends, and travels to major recruitment venues for diversity recruitment efforts, e.g. NOBCChE, NSBE, SHPE, SACNAS and others (this will require domestic travel and occasional work outside of the normal work week)
  • Acts as liaison to, and develop strong relationships with, applicants and potential applicants with relevant center senior investigators
  • Provides support and instruction to applicants through the application process
  • Develops and maintains a system to track both applicants and potential applicants and to monitor their progress in connecting with senior investigators and their application status
  • Coordinates applications across multiple Colleges and Departments at across partnering institutions
  • Works with the co-leads of Broadening Participation (BP), Education and entrepreneurship, and VetIF (outreach to veterans) to select students for campus visits with a focus on diversifying participation in each of these efforts.
  • Serves as a resource for faculty with respect of centers educational programs and student support.
  • Coordinates campus visits, including visits from minority-serving institutions and schools that have specific programs to prepare undergraduates from underrepresented groups for scientific graduate programs.
  • Communicates with all partner institutions' offices of student disability and counseling services (or equivalent) to ensure that all necessary accommodations are made to provide equal opportunities and resources to COMPASS students
  • Works collaboratively with the other center leaders to execute the weekly seminar series
  • Assists in the implementation of the Individualized Development Plans (IDPs),.
  • Compiles materials and writes content for the NSF annual report and for evaluation by advisory groups.

QualificationsMinimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree and at least three years of experience in a role related to graduate student recruitment, graduate student mentoring, and/or supporting the diversity, inclusion, and equity (DEI) goals of an academic organization
Other Required Qualifications
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills, including proofreading
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and as a team player
Preferred Qualifications
  • Technical training or knowledge in at least one area of science relevant to COMPASS, including but not limited to engineering, agriculture, and the social sciences
  • Demonstrated experience in the positive mentoring of undergraduate students, graduate students, and/or postdoctoral scholars.
  • Experience working with African institutions
