We are searching for a qualified Senior GL Accountant to help keep our financial records accurate, timely and ensure compliance with accounting principles. The Senior GL Accountant will join a close-knit team focused on our non-profit health care company operations at SSMO Ministries Corporation, helping us to strategize savings, perform impactful audits, furnish leadership with informative information, and grow our financial position.This is a full time on-site position.
Experience in non-profit industry preferred.

The Senior General Ledger Accountant reports directly to the Ministries Controller and is responsible for overseeing the accounting and financial reporting activities for assigned entities and processes. This role ensures the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of the general ledger , in compliance with applicable accounting standards and internal policies. The Senior General Ledger Accountant plays a key role in month-end and year-end closing, supports audits, and contributes to process improvements and system efficiencies across the finance function.Essential Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Prepare, document and post all assigned journal entries. Enter financial data such as accruals, deferrals, reclassifications, and interdepartmental entries into the general ledger on a monthly basis.
  • Produce, issue, analyze and distribute monthly financial reports for any assigned entities.
  • Manage accounting records, including record retention.
  • Reconcile all balance sheet accounts, including bank and investment accounts on a monthly basis, identifying and resolving any discrepancies for assigned entities.
  • Serve as Finance liaison with members of management of all departments and entities with a customer service approach to solve issues and provide needed services.
  • Monitor and assist in implementation and management of electronic accounts payable system.
  • Serve as backup to key accounting and finance functions, understanding activity in all entities in organizational structure.
  • Ensure all year-end activity is recorded in the general ledger, annual procedures are completed, and requested audit workpapers are accurate and completed timely.
  • Support the Ministries Controller and other finance team professionals as needed.
  • Perform weekly and monthly accounting duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Abilities:
  • Proven working knowledge of manual and electronic accounting systems and software.
  • Ability to decipher technical accounting rules, formalize new procedures and document the changes.
  • Understand and follow standard internal controls that apply to audited entities.
  • Excellent collaboration and both written and verbal communication skills.
  • Capacity to work in a team environment.
  • Ability and desire to change and improve processes.
  • Highly focused, detail-oriented finance professional.
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance or equivalent.
  • Four (4) or more years of experience with general ledger accounting or similar.
  • GAAP
Preferred Skills:
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) License is an advantage.
  • Familiarity with HRIS Systems (Paycom).
  • Experience working in a nonprofit organization is preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including, patience, empathy and compassion.
  • Effective communication skills, including the ability to speak fluent English.

Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.
  • Regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls and reach with hands and arms; frequently required to stand walk, talk, sit, and hear; occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach above shoulder height, reach below the waist, or lift as needed throughout the work day. Proper lifting techniques are required.
