POSITION PURPOSE AND SUMMARYThe Phlebotomist serves as a liaison between the hospital laboratory and the patient by collecting blood specimens, urine and other specimens from both inpatients and outpatients including outreach phlebotomy, under general supervision, according to prescribed aseptic technique, for use in clinical and diagnostic laboratory testing. The Phlebotomist is capable of handling problem-solving regarding appropriate specimen collection, handling, delivery of specimens to the main laboratory for analysis, test order and specimen information entry in LIS, and performs incidental clerical, cleaning and supply duties. Also, this Phlebotomist can collect nasopharyngeal specimens for Flu and COVID-19 specimens; cover Occupational Health Testing by collecting Urine specimen for Federal Drug Screen and non-Federal Drug Screen, and performing Breath Alcohol Testing; cover the Central Processing workstation and perform two or more waived Point of Care Testing. Duties are performed under the supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor, Charge/Lead Phlebotomist, and Laboratory Administrative Director/Site Laboratory Manager.EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:Education/Required –High school graduate or equivalent.Must have at least one of the following:
  • Successful completion of accredited Phlebotomy certification program
Certification/RequiredMust have at least one of the following:
  • Registered or eligible to sit for a nationally accepted certification. Must pass certification within 1 year of hire.
