Position DescriptionThe Pennington County Sheriff's Office currently has openings in our Reserve Deputy Program!The Reserve Deputy Sheriff is responsible for performing duties with an experienced Deputy Sheriff throughout the county, including enforcement of laws, prevention and suppression of crime and protection of the public in emergency situations. The Pennington County Sheriff is charged with patrolling the 2,783 square miles of land and protecting approximately 100,000 citizens.This is an exceptional opportunity to provide service to your community and/or explore a start to a public safety career.South Dakota law requires certified Reserve law enforcement officers to work a minimum of 96 hours each calendar year (approximately 8 hours per month).Reserve Deputy training is conducted in Rapid City every Tuesday and Thursday evening, from 6:00pm to 10:00 pm, and a few Saturdays between April and August. Reserves are provided uniforms and equipment.Physical Agility Testing will be held Wednesday, January 24th 6:00pm. Attendance is required to advance in the selection process. Interviews and pre-employment background process will follow.Reserve Deputies are required to meet all minimum hiring and annual requirements as a full-time Deputy Sheriff and adhere to applicable policies and procedures to include those outlined expectations off duty.Reserve Deputies are volunteers with the opportunity for paid assignments during the Central States Fair and Sturgis Motorcycle Rally each August.Position Functions
  • Patrolling the county for prevention and suppression of crime, enforcement of laws (federal, state and local) and ordinances, investigation of illegal or suspicious activities and ensuring the protection of life and property.
  • Responds to calls relayed by radio, including domestic disputes, arrests, burglaries, traffic accidents, lost or missing persons, and stranded motorists.
  • Carries out investigations of assigned cases; collects evidence; identifies and apprehends offenders; interviews complainants; victims; witnesses and suspects; conducts follow-up investigations as required.
  • Responds to crime scenes; examines crime scene to identify and collect evidence; photographs scenes; lifts fingerprints and makes composites.
  • Locating and making physical arrests of law violators or active warrant subjects.
  • Interviewing witnesses/suspects and preparing written reports and appearing in court as a witness.
  • Transporting or escorting prisoners to courtrooms, prisons/jails or medical facilities.
  • Assisting in serving civil process and court orders.
  • Maintaining ability to testify as a credible witness in court.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.
