Job Goal: To assist the Transportation Director in planning, directing, coordinating, and overseeing all functions pertaining to the operation and maintenance of the Transportation Department, this will include heading the department training and professional development of both new and licensed drivers, and all other transportation employees.Some of the essential functions of this position will be:
  • Assists in planning, implementing, and overseeing transportation services as determined by the Board of Directors and MSAD 6 policies.
  • Assists in reviewing and evaluating all regular bus routes, schedules, and stops.
  • Participates along with other school officials and parents in an effort to resolve or prevent misconduct and unsafe conditions, which involve the transportation system.
  • Reviews camera video when necessary to correct/prevent misconduct and unsafe situations at the direction of the Transportation Director or building Administrator(s).
  • Assists in the development of the Transportation Department budget and administers the expenditure of funds as allocated.
  • Collects data and develops all required school bus transportation oriented reports and ensures their submission on a timely basis.
  • Assists with recruiting, interviewing, background checks, and recommendations for employment of bus drivers, substitutes, and aides to drivers.
  • Oversees Transportation training personnel to ensure compliance with the codes and pertinent policies regarding training, licensing, registration and operational permits; continued professional development; and traffic safety programs.
  • Responsible for collecting, approving, and reporting payroll information to the Payroll Department.
  • Attends IEP meetings to communicate and collaborate with Special Services personnel to evaluate and implement accommodations to meet the needs of special education students with regard to special transportation related services.
  • Oversees planning and implementation of special transportation, as needed, for individuals and for summer programming.
  • Responds to community, parent, and student transportation concerns and assists in interpreting transportation procedures and regulations and communicating with community and staff.
  • Assists in evaluating general maintenance programs with specific attention to safety.
  • Assists in establishing standards for performance, operational care, service, and maintenance of all vehicles within the Department.
  • Recommend and assists with the development and implementation of District transportation policies and procedures.
  • Assists in conducting accident investigations and oversees accident reporting to appropriate law enforcement and insurance agencies.
  • Assists with evaluating, coaching, and development of transportation personnel.
  • Complies with Federal laws requiring drug and alcohol testing requirements and record keeping for all bus drivers.
  • Applies for and receives supervisory certification needed to administer drug and alcohol testing programs.
  • Assists Transportation Director and training personnel to develop in-service training opportunities for transportation personnel to improve skills, attitudes, and knowledge of school-related transportation and student management.
  • Assists in evaluating safety of road conditions during inclement weather and provides timely information to the Transportation Director.
  • Performs related duties as assigned by the Transportation Director, Business Manager, and/or the Superintendent, in accordance with MSAD 6 policies and practice.
  • Provides Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) in compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and State of Maine laws and regulations
  • Works collaboratively with Special Services to develop and implement a training program for Special Transportation personnel
  • Assists the Transportation Director in providing professional development for In-Service and Remote Learning Days
  • Assists in conducting accident investigation and review for the purpose of ensuring that all relevant information is collected; suggests and follows up with retraining as necessary
  • Reviews safety practices and recommends changes as necessary to ensure the safety of all stakeholders
  • Maintains physical and electronic compliance files and training records as required by FMCSA, State of Maine Training Registry, and Department of Transportation
  • Works in conjunction with Human Resources to recruit new school bus drivers
  • Coordinates annual/semi-annual training as required to maintain First Aid/CPR certification, Safety Care Certification, defensive driving instruction and other subjects as deemed necessary by Federal/State regulation and district policy
  • Assists the Transportation Director in evaluating all elements of the transportation training program on a continuing basis, establishing standards for performance and daily operations
  • Attends in-service training to improve knowledge and skills pertaining to pupil transportation
  • Assists in establishing and maintaining good public relations
  • Performs bus driver duties as required for the purpose of providing adequate coverage
Qualifications:

High school diploma or high school equivalency with five (5) years’ experience as a bus driver. Experience in a management or decision-making position preferred.Key Competencies:

Knowledge of administrative procedures; knowledge of computers and relevant software applications; knowledge of customer service principles and practices; ability to constructively deal with conflict.
