- Examines, evaluates, diagnoses, and administers treatment for patients with speech, language, cognitive, voice, swallowing/feeding and hearing disorders.
- Demonstrates appropriate evaluation and counseling skills to patients of all age groups with ongoing assessment and re-evaluation as needed.
- Possesses and maintains understanding of the principles of growth and development as it pertains to patient care.
- Assesses data reflective of the patient's status and interprets the information to implement effective therapeutic interventions specific to patient's age and clinical needs.
- Attends so specific patient variables such as age, cognitive status, stamina, etc., in planning treatment goals/sessions to best serve patient's needs.
- Develops appointment schedules, which are calculated to have the maximum feasible therapeutic impact on the patient.
- Maintains active and supportive communication with the patient and others concerned regarding progress, problems, home programs, and other issues related to the therapeutic process. Attends patient care staffing meetings, conferences, and other related meetings, which pertain to speech-language pathology patients.
- Develops age-specific, patients/family/staff education materials and performs internal and external education functions (i.e., in-services, workshops) to improve the quality of patient care.
- Assist in the development and implementation of department's Quality Improvement program with guidance from department head and rehabilitation QI coordinator so that patient care and department efficiency are enhanced.
- Maintains all appropriate departmental records (i.e., evaluation findings, therapy programs, results) and adheres to patient confidentiality guidelines.
- Attends and participates in unit, department, and mandatory rehabilitation center and hospital in-service to ensure appropriate understanding and knowledge of policies and procedures related to all patient and employee safety issues including, but not limited to infection control, risk management and AIDS.
- Supervises student clinicians for speech-language pathology graduate programs.
- Assumes responsibility for professional growth and development in area of speech-language pathology and related fields by reading current literature and attending appropriate in-service training.
- Follows and performs all related unit specific policies and procedures, as detailed on the unit specific competency check-list.
- Utilizes job and unit specific equipment as required.
- Demonstrates behaviors of service excellence and CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Expertise).
- Performs all other related job duties as assigned.
- Performs additional advanced job duties, as outlined in the Rehab Clinical Ladder, which must be pre-approved and determined by the Rehab Committee.
- Active License as a Speech Pathologist required.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)and any additional applicable life support certification for Healthcare Providers is required upon hire withat least 6 months validity and maintenance at JHS for the duration of employment.
