Job DescriptionThe Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is looking for a Temporary Accounting Technician to join its Accounting Team in Richfield, Utah. The Accounting Technician performs various accounting and financial functions for the agency. We are looking for a detail-oriented and self-motivated candidate.You will perform a variety of accounting activities that may include payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, travel fund, audit research, and other related accounting tasks. You will support professional staff, including accountants, payroll, budget officers, auditors, and others. Other duties you will perform include reviewing documents for completeness and accuracy, performing adjustments to data and accounts, preparing reports, and creating, filing, and retrieving files.Principle Duties
As an Accounting Technician, you will:
  • Interact with the public and insurance companies recovering funds for state damaged property.
  • Prepare and process payroll, billings, disbursements, and related documents.
  • Review invoices, warrants, or other documentation; check accuracy of figures; code authorizations, exceptions, discounts, taxes, etc.
  • Prepare and/or process documents; update information and/or evaluate against policy; compare elements for consistency or logical relationships, etc.
  • Review documents and reconcile discrepancies; make needed adjustments.
  • Enter data into a computer system and retrieve, correct, or delete previously entered data.
  • Perform processing, coordinating, and preparing of in-state and out-of-state travel requests and travel reimbursements.
  • Receive, research, and respond to incoming questions or complaints; provide information, explain policy and procedures, and/or facilitate a resolution.
  • Write or draft correspondence, reports, documents and/or other written materials.
  • Provide administrative support.
  • Review data, records, and files for detail and accuracy.
Minimum Qualifications
The qualified candidate for this position will have:
  • Accounting experience, including processing payroll.
  • Experience with accounts payable and/or recievable and general bookkeeping procedures.
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Calendar, Gmail, etc.) and Adobe applications.
Preferences
Preference may be given to applicants who have at least one of the following:
  • Prior collenctions experience, including account follow-up, negotiating payment arrangements, and customer account reconiliation.
  • An Associate's Degree or higher in a related field.
  • Experience using Vantage (formerly FINET - the state of Utah's accounting system).
  • Experience processing state travel.
  • Current or previous State of Utah experience.
  • Current or previous UDOT experience.

  • Using basic/business math to solve problems.
  • Reviewing and/or editing documents for accuracy and completeness.
  • Bookkeeping procedures.
  • Using automated accounting computer systems.
  • Using computer systems such as Microsoft Excel, Word, and Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Calendar, Gmail, etc.), and Adobe applications.
  • Making decisions or solving problems using logic to identify key facts, explore alternatives, and propose quality solutions.
  • Compiling, coding, categorizing, calculating, tabulating, auditing, verifying, or processing information or data.
  • Operating a computer keyboard and 10-key numerical pad by touch.
  • Entering, scanning, recording, storing, or maintaining information in either written or electronic form.
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures of an office environment.
  • Speaking clearly, concisely, and effectively; listening to and understanding information and ideas presented verbally.
  • Communicating information and ideas clearly and concisely in writing; reading and understanding information presented in writing.
  • Dealing with people in a manner which shows sensitivity, tact, and professionalism.
  • Establishing, organizing, and/or maintaining files.
  • Finding, gathering, and collecting information or data.
Supplemental Information
Additional information of which you should be aware:
  • This is a temporary position. The position will be approximately 20-40 hours per week. It will start at approximately 20 hours per week while in training. Once training is complete, the hours may increase up to 40 hours per week.
  • The position may be considered for conversion to a career service role contingent on funding, performance, and organizational needs.
  • Physical Requirements - Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items such as papers, books, small parts; driving an automobile, etc. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.
  • Working Conditions - Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.
  • Employee may be reassigned to a different location as deemed necessary by the Region Director/Group Leader.
