Specifically, the employee is primarily responsible for compliance with regulatory programs in the coastal zone encompassing the initiation and coordination of compliance activities within established guidelines and approved policies and procedures of SCDES BCM. This process includes reading, interpreting, and preparing technical reports, attending meetings with responsible parties and consultants, communicating in writing and verbally with responsible parties and consultants and conducting site evaluations.Responsibilities:Initiates and coordinates compliance activities within established BCM policies, procedures and guidelines.Interprets and applies statutes and regulations, prepares technical reports, attends meetings with responsible parties and consultants, communicates in writing and verbally with responsible parties and consultants.Conducts site evaluations at various locations in beachfront and estuarine environments within a large geographic area.Accesses and inspects docks and erosion control structures adjacent to and extending over tidal waters.Promptly responds to reports of unauthorized activities occurring within BCM's jurisdictional boundaries; some reports may require immediate action leading to unplanned field work.Participates in an annual inventory of habitable structures, pools and erosion control structures located within BCM's beachfront jurisdiction.Conducts damage assessment of beachfront structures following a disaster that impacts the SC coast.Training and development opportunities available for operation of sUAS (drone) equipment and trailering/operation of a vessel.Minimum Requirements:
  • A bachelor's degree in the natural or physical sciences or a related scientific field
  • OR an associate degree in the natural or physical sciences or related technical field and at least one (1) year of environmental health or related experience
  • OR a high school diploma or GED and at least three (3) years of environmental health or related experience

Please note that the agency may require an official, certified copy of the transcript or diploma prior to hiring.Additional Requirements:Work effectively in a team-oriented environment and encourage positive working relationships.Routinely work independently in a field environment, potentially the entire work week, in all reasonable weather conditions.Access non-traditional work environments; must be able to swim for safety purposes and work comfortably in a boat on open water and in all weather conditions.Maintain a professional appearance in all work environments. Possess a valid driver's license and maintain a good driving record to operate personal and state-owned vehicles; be comfortable operating and/or riding in a vehicle for an extended period of time.Effectively prioritize and work with cooperative agencies and across program areas.Be proficient with tablet/laptop personal computers, and Microsoft Office™ software.Learn and maintain office databases (i.e. ..ePermitting, etc.)
  • Knowledge of the statutes, regulations, policies and information sources related to the SC Coastal Management Program.
  • Experience and proficiency with Esri® products and various GPS equipment
