- Required NJDOE certification: school social worker, school psychologist or school counselor;
- Required Professional License: Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Associate Counselor (LAC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or Licensed Psychologist;
- Effective problem-solving, human relations and communication skills including strong interpersonal skills;
- Demonstrated ability to perform all responsibilities listed in job description in a satisfactory manner;
- Demonstrated effectiveness working with families and community health and social services agencies as determined by the board;
- Ability to work on site during the hours required
- Required criminal history check and proof of U.S. citizenship or resident alien status;
- Such alternatives to the above as the Board of Education may deem appropriate and acceptable.
Referrals are typically made to MCS by a CST Case Manager, SAC, or School Counselor, with supporting data also gathered from CST and I&RS/504 Teams. Collaborations with community providers and MCS stakeholders is also coordinated throughout the referral and treatment process. Priority is given to those with a history of or current mental health & wellness needs.PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: * Provide therapeutic services to students and families in a coordinated setting with the school and community; both individual and group counseling services as well as family supports.
- Coordinate and deliver Individual and group counseling sessions based on student need.
- Therapeutic caseload up to 30 students per clinician.\\
- Attend IEP meetings and Section 504 committee meetings, providing consultation, goal development, and progress monitoring as necessary.
- Regular communication, meetings and support to caregivers about their child.
- Record and maintain confidential records, reporting and data for each student.
- Collaboration with administration, school counselors, and Child Study Team
- Complete risk assessments for students with suicidal ideation, threats to others, and self-harm, making necessary referrals for high levels of care, as outlined by district
- Development of treatment and referral recommendations for students returning to district after risk assessment or participation in IOP/PHP.
- For school avoidant students, use of specialized protocols and staff to make therapeutic home visits and encourage enhanced school attendance.
- Observe student behavior to assess needs and create treatment strategies.
- Provide bi-weekly discussion with school leadership, school counselors and child study team members reviewing the status and progress of each student.
- Coordinate programs and services with other school-based activities and community agencies.
- Identify and plan appropriate strategies that will assist principals, guidance counselors and teachers in early intervention and student assistance techniques to enable students to remain in an educational setting with their peers.
- Conduct intake interviews with students and families to assess their situation.
- Work closely with teachers, administrators, and other staff to identify students in need and/or crisis.
- Develop plans to improve students’ and families’ well being on an ongoing basis.
- Intervene when students are in danger of neglect or abuse by following Board policy and reporting procedures and providing means for follow-up.
- Evaluate services provided on a regular basis to ensure that they are effective and make changes when necessary.
- Ability to diagnose and treat mental, behavioral, and emotional issues.
- Maintain a system for reevaluating students who have exited the program to ascertain if support is still needed or students are doing well.
- Assist with in-service training programs for school personnel (administrators, teachers, guidance counselors, etc) in managing students with emotional and behavioral problems.
- Assume other related responsibilities and duties within the context of the above, state law and board policies.
