Summary StatementThe Weights and Measures Section is seeking a Weights and Measures Inspector I for New Castle County and City of Wilmington. This position is responsible for the inspecting, testing and regulating all commercial transactions involving weighing or measuring. Regulates all devices used commercially to determine weight, measurement, or count. It is also responsible for enforcing the Delaware Packaging and Labeling Regulations under the supervision of the Weights and Measures Administrator.Career LadderUpon satisfactory completion of department promotional standards and job requirements, employees may be eligible to be promoted to the next level.Essential FunctionsEssential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class.   • Tests retail store scales, large platform scales and motor truck scales up to a capacity of 150,000 pounds.
  • Tests flow meter devices such as gasoline pumps, fuel oil truck meters and propane meters.
  • Tests packaged and canned items for net weight as stated in the label.
  • Performs mathematics such as calculating percentages and averages.
  • Explains statutory requirements and test procedures to owners and managers of businesses.
  • Takes appropriate action in cases of violations, mislabeled products removed from shelves and inaccurate devices ordered to be repaired. Suspected fraud is reported to supervisor for possible criminal action.
  • May appear in court as a witness.
  • May participate in fraud investigations.
  • Prepares reports and keeps records.

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas: * Knowledge of inspecting, testing, weighing and measuring devices.
  • Knowledge of math such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, or decimals.
  • Knowledge of record keeping.
  • Knowledge of applying laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of using an automated information system to enter, update, modify, delete, retrieve/inquire and report on data.
  • Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).
