Mechanic I-II*JOB DESCRIPTION FOR MECHANIC II FOLLOWS JOB DESCRIPTION FOR MECHANIC I*Position Summary - MECHANIC IThis is a skilled position in the maintenance and repair of municipal diesel, gasoline, and alternative powered automotive and fleet related equipment. Including vehicles, fire apparatus, stand-by generators, mowers, tractors and other standard and specialized heavy equipment. Supervision is occasionally exercised over subordinate mechanics and work is performed under the supervision of the Equipment Maintenance Division Superintendent.Essential Functions
Reads repair and wiring diagrams for the purpose of repairing mechanical devices.
Performs general overhaul and repair work on automotive and mechanical equipment.
Performs motor tune-ups using standard testing equipment.
Inspects, overhauls and assembles automotive electrical equipment.
Repairs and overhauls brakes, transmissions, differentials, front and rear axle assemblies and repairs and installs hydraulic controls and related equipment.
Engages and observes mechanical devices, engines and equipment in operation and listens to their sounds to locate causes of trouble; performs other tests to locate defects and road tests all equipment before returning it to service.
Dismantles devices to gain access to and remove defective parts; adjusts functional parts of machinery and equipment.
Examines form and texture of parts to detect imperfections; inspects used parts to determine changes in dimensional requirements.
Repairs and reinforces welds on all equipment; designs, fabricates and installs miscellaneous hardware on various equipment using a portable arc welder, shop arc, welder, wire feed welder and grinding and cutting devices.
Repairs and maintains standby generators.
Uses electronic test equipment to properly diagnose and repair electronic engine controls and drivability problems.
Performs some auto and equipment body repair and painting work; replaces corroded or damaged body parts.
Re-engineers equipment to best suit the City's needs; repairs, replaces or adjusts defective parts, such as brakes, spark plugs, carburetors and ignition systems; fabricates new parts when old ones are not available.
Installs special functional and structural parts in devices.
Safely operates heavy equipment; and able to diagnose and repair all serviceable systems within.
Uses service truck and small crane during various public works assignments/ projects.
Uses, repairs and maintains shop tools and equipment.
Works unsupervised when needed during snow/salt operations, road calls and field service operations.
Understands and repairs complex emergency lighting and accessories.
May occasionally be required to diagnose, test, remove and replace emergency lighting and accessories.
Completes routine reports on work performed and equipment used.
Possesses ability to order and obtain all the correct repair parts in a timely manner.
Ensures the maintenance of safe work areas and equipment promptly corrects work hazards, as necessary. Investigates and reports all work-related injuries immediately, complies with all safety rules and attends appropriate safety programs.
Promotes and maintains responsive community relations.
Performs related duties and manual labor as assigned.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent; Minimum of five years' experience in automotive, truck and equipment maintenance and repair, vocational or technical training in the area of auto mechanics; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, certifications and experience as determined by Human Resources.
Valid driver's license.
Class A-CDL with Air Brake and Tanker Endorsement required as well as, Renew/obtain any necessary ASE or EVT certification within one year of hire.
Must own complete set of mechanics tools.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to supervise assigned crew workers as well as maintain working relationships with other staff.
Ability to frequently lift and move up to 50 pounds; occasionally up to 100 pounds with assistance.
Required Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools, materials and equipment the automotive mechanic trade.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions in the automotive mechanic trade.
Ability to use tools, materials and equipment in a correct and safe manner.
Ability to work from diagrams and schematics.
