ResponsibilitiesThe Technical Designer has responsibility for a team of designers and draftsmen to create functional mechanical and scenic fabrication drawings for the needs of a variety of markets; including Theater, Live Music, Special Events, Television, and Corporate Industrial. Collaborating directly with clients and team members, the Senior Technical Designer will be responsible for creating shop-ready drawings, so the client concept and design can be executed in a manner that will be both effective and profitable.The Technical Designer leads the projects overall technical drafting efforts toward safe, reliable, and efficient solutions that exceed the client’s functional goals and the company’s expected profit. Directs, coordinates, and exercises functional authority for planning, organization, control, integration, and completion of technical drafting project within area of assigned responsibility:
  • Work with Client’s Scenic Design Team to bring their bid draftings to a fabrication set for the shop floor.
  • Interface with estimating department to prepare project bid and define scope.
  • Interface with client to define overall requirements for each project.
  • Provide concept and fabrication layouts.
  • Complete all pertinent calculations, analysis, and documentation.
  • Review all safety and reliability concerns.
  • Generate accurate bills of materials and highlight long lead items that could delay fabrication.
  • Interface with production departments to ensure all design and performance goals are met.
  • Support and cross train Technical Designers and Draftsmen in design disciplines.
QualificationsKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills
  • Team player to work with a dynamic team.
  • Microsoft office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, and Power Point) are mandatory.
  • Knowledge of parametric design software.
  • Static Physics knowledge is a plus.
  • Electrical knowledge is a plus.
  • Knowledge of entertainment staging techniques (Lighting, Video, Rigging and Automation) a plus.
  • Knowledge of Creo and Windchill is a plus
Required education and experience
  • Bachelors or Master’s degree in Technical Theater. Equivalent work experience could be a substitute.
  • Extensive experience in Technical Design of machinery and Fabrication of Scenery within the entertainment industry, minimum 5 years of experience
  • 3D AutoCAD experience is a must or other equivalent modeling programs.
  • Vector Works experience is a plus.
Physical demands
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time.
  • The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
  • The position requires the ability to see clearly (with or without the aid of glasses or contact lenses) during responsibilities on and off a computer.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively by listening and in both written and verbal forms.
