Job Title: GIS Technician Job DescriptionThe role involves input, processing, and maintenance of Alabama Power Distribution Lines and Equipment assets in an ESRI GIS database. You will be responsible for managing asset data, creating maps, and providing GIS support for engineering and operations.Responsibilities
  • Collect, input, and maintain accurate geospatial data for electric distribution infrastructure, including poles, transformers, conductors, switches, and meters within an ESRI-based GIS system.
  • Produce and update detailed maps and schematics of the electrical grid to support engineering, operations, and field crews, ensuring maps reflect current field conditions and planned changes.
  • Perform regular audits and validations of GIS data to ensure accuracy, consistency, and compliance with company standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with field personnel to incorporate GPS and mobile data collection into the GIS database, reconciling discrepancies between field observations and existing GIS records.
  • Provide GIS analysis and mapping support for planning, outage management, asset tracking, and system reliability studies, assisting in modeling and visualizing network changes or expansions.
Essential Skills
  • Proficiency in GIS, ArcGIS, and ESRI ArcGIS software.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Geography, GIS, or a related field, or a GIS Certificate.
  • At least 2 years of full-time GIS work experience.
  • Experience with power distribution is a plus.
  • Competency with CAD software and standard computer software, including Microsoft Office suite.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with ESRI ArcGIS Pro software is a plus.
  • Utilities experience is advantageous.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Work EnvironmentThe position offers a flexible work schedule of 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, in an office environment in Birmingham, Alabama, with a possibility of remote work. The schedule may be 8 or 10 hours per day, starting as early as 7am and ending as late as 5pm. A stable broadband Internet connection is required for remote work. After a training period of approximately three months in Birmingham, the role may transition to mostly remote work with occasional meetings and training sessions in the office. Candidates must live within commuting distance to the Birmingham office as no per diem is available for onsite training and meetings.Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract position based out of Birmingham, Alabama.Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $20.00 - $25.00/hr.Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job
