The lead mechanic is responsible for oversight of the transportation garage operations regarding school bus maintenance and repair.QUALIFICATIONS:18 years of age or olderPass a background checkPossess a valid driver’s licensePossess or be able to obtain a Michigan CDL with appropriate endorsementsPossess or able to pass DOT physicalPossess or be able to obtain Michigan HD truck repair certificationLeadership experience preferredRESPONSIBILITIES:Establish a routine preventative maintenance schedule for buses and district vehiclesEnsure that all buses are regularly inspected and maintained to meet standards of the MI State Police inspection.Maintain adequate maintenance and repair records for all district vehicles and equipment.Assists the Mechanic in routine maintenance and repair of the district’s fleet.Ordering and managing parts, supplies, and materials inventorySupport shop cleanliness and safetyWorking knowledge of the Transportation Operation ManualCoordinates with Director of Transportation all safety concernsAttends all staff meetings, team meetings and training as requestedSubstitute bus driving as neededPerforms any other duties as assigned by the Director of TransportationPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Sitting, standing, lifting and carrying (up to 50 pounds), reaching, squatting, climbing stairs, kneeling, drivingSAFETY AND HEALTH:Knowledge of repair shop, bus yard, and roadside safety precautionsEQUIPMENT/MATERIALS HANDLED:All things needed to maintain, diagnose and repair school buses and other vehiclesWORK ENVIRONMENT:Must be able to work within various degrees of noise, temperature, and air quality. Interruptions of work are routine. Flexibility and patience are required. Job responsibilities may include both inside and outside duties. Must be self-motivated and able to complete job assignments without direct supervision. After hours work may be required.
