10 Month Contract: Teacher Assistants are required to work 7.0 hours per day in Elementary Positions with a 30-minute duty free lunch, 7 hours and 20 minutes per day in Middle School Positions with a 20 minute break and 30 minute duty free lunch break, and 7 hours and 25 minutes per day in High School Positions with a 25 minute break with a 30 minute duty free lunch break as scheduled by the Building Principal and the Director of Pupil Personnel Services and the Assistant Director of Pupil Personnel Services.
Teacher Assistants are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner, maintain confidentiality and communicate well with others.
They are expected to collaborate with general education teachers, special education teachers, child study team members and related services providers (Speech, O.T., P.T.) and may, on occasion, be asked to attend Child Study Team meetings with parents or faculty members.PROFICIENCIES NEEDED:
Teacher Assistants (also referred to as Teacher Assistants) should be attentive to student activities, be able to provide assistance and nurturing to handicapped children.
The aide must also be able to keep information confidential and have a disposition compatible with the needs displayed by children with varied educational disabilities.
Aides are in the classrooms to support the program; they do not provide direct instruction.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Prompting, cueing and redirecting student participation
Reinforcing of personal, social, behavioral, and academic learning goals;
Organizing and managing materials and activities; and
Implementation of teacher-designed follow-up and practice activitiesAssignments:
As per N.J. Administrative Code for Special Education (N.J. 6A: 14), Teacher Assistants may:
Provide supplementary aides and services to a special education student or students placed in the general education class.
Provide support in Resource Center programs such as Pull-out Support or Replacement, depending on the group size.
Serve as a Teacher Assistant in special class programs, depending on the group size.
Serve as an individual assistant for a special education student to assist with instruction, under the direction of the teacher, implement behavior plans, and any other responsibilities as needed by the individual student, as per the IEP.EVALUATION:
Teacher Assistants are supervised by both the building Principal and the Director of Pupil Personnel Services and the Assistant Director of Pupil Personnel Services and receive an annual written evaluation.QUALIFICATIONS/CERTIFICATION:

Eligibility for substitute certification
College degree preferred
